Women’s Basketball Finishes Season at Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Texas – It was a tough way to end the season for the Western New Mexico University women's basketball team, as Angelo State, currently tied for the top mark in the Lone Star Conference, scored almost 20 points in every quarter on their way to claiming the 86-31 conference victory on Saturday afternoon.

It was the final game as Lady Mustangs (1-27, 1-19 LSC) for Jade Botelho (Honolulu, HI/Iolani), Lucy Benning (El Paso, TX/El Paso) and Myla Woods-Brown (Roswell, NM/Roswell). Woods-Brown tallied three points and four rebounds, while Botelho and Benning each had a rebound. Junior Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado) again paced the offense with 13 points and she led the team in rebounding for the second straight game with eight. Freshman Jenika Padilla (Las Vegas, NM/West Las Vegas) added six points and six rebounds. Fifteen times this season Fields either led the team or tied for the team lead in scoring.

Angelo State (21-5, 16-4 LSC) used solid shooting, making 34-62 (55) from the field and 10-24 (42) from three to fuel the victory. In addition, the defense was stifling limiting WNMU to an 18 percent clip (10-55) and 4-28 (14) from three. They also took advantage of 20 turnovers to hold a 25-0 points off turnovers advantage.

Fields gave the Lady Mustangs their first and only lead of the game nearly a minute in when she connected on a jumper. Keanna Kelly came right back for the Belles with a three-pointer and Angelo State never trailed the remainder of the game.

WNMU fought back to within five a couple of times over the next several minutes when Fields hit a pair of jumpers, with the last leaving Angelo State with a 11-6 lead near the midway point of the opening quarter.

The Belles closed the final five minutes on a 9-0 run to take a 20-6 lead entering the second stanza.

Woods-Brown ended the 11-0 run almost two minutes in when she took a pass from junior Takiyah Lopez (El Paso, TX/Chapin) and drained a jumper. A 14-0 run followed for the Belles and after Fields hit two from the line, they were looking at a 42-16 lead at halftime.

Freshman Rachel Francisco (Seattle, WA/Holy Names Academy), Fields and Padilla all scored for the Lady Mustangs in the third as Angelo State outscored WNMU 27-7 in the third to open up a 69-23 lead.

Lopez, Francisco and Woods-Brown collected points in the fourth before the Belles closed out the win.

Five players scored in double-figures for Angelo State with Dezirae Hampton going for a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds, leading all-players in both categories. Kelly added 17 points, Madi Greenwood with 14, Marquita Daniels with 12 and Ekiya Gray with 10. Kelly and Gray almost had double-doubles as well with seven rebounds apiece.

The Lady Mustangs will return several players next season including Kai'Naja Walton (Odessa, TX/Odessa), redshirt season, Lopez, who will be a senior, Padilla, who will be a sophomore, Cassandra Vickery (Tularosa, NM/Tularosa), who will be a sophomore after losing part of the season due to injury, Francisco, who will be a sophomore, Fields, who will be a senior and Ashton Carrasco (El Paso, TX/Canutillo), who will be a senior after losing part of the season due to injury.
