All Four Seniors Record Points on Senior Day Against Midwestern State

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Seniors Jade Botelho (Honolulu, HI/Iolani), Lucy Benning (El Paso, TX/El Paso), Myla Woods-Brown (Roswell, NM/Roswell) and Melody McLaughlin (Tucson, AZ/Mountain View) combined for 21 points during their final home games as Lady Mustangs on Saturday. Midwestern State University ruined the party, however, as they used a balanced scoring effort to defeat the Western New Mexico University women's basketball team 80-45 in Lone Star Conference play.

Woods-Brown saved her best game for last as her 11 points not only was a season-high, but career-high mark as well. She went 4-7 from the field, along with four rebounds and an assist. Botelho added six points, with three rebounds, two assists and three steals. Both Benning and McLaughlin scored two points apiece. Benning added a rebound, while McLaughlin had two rebounds, two assists and three steals.

Junior Takiyah Lopez (El Paso, TX/Chapin) led the Lady Mustangs with 12 points, while junior Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado) added 10 points.

Woods-Brown opened the scoring for WNMU (1-25, 1-17 LSC) hitting a foul shot nearly two minutes in. Midwestern State (13-11, 10-8 LSC) came right back 22 seconds later to claim the lead back. After another jumper by Woods-Brown had the deficit back to one at 4-3, MSU reeled off the next seven points to open up a 11-3 lead with four minutes to play in the quarter.

Trailing by 10, WNMU closed the first quarter strong as Lopez hit a three-pointer and Woods-Brown closed the scoring for the quarter when her layup left MSU with a 17-12 advantage.

A Botelho jumper two minutes into the second quarter had WNMU back to within six, when MSU pushed the lead into double-digits thanks to an 8-0 run that left them with a 30-16 lead. WNMU trimmed the deficit back to 12 a few times, with the last coming right at the buzzer when Lopez drilled a three-pointer leaving MSU with a 35-23 halftime lead.

MSU quickly erased the momentum gained on the three-pointer, as they scored the first six points of the third quarter to jump out to a 41-23 lead. A Fields three-pointer and later a layup by Woods-Brown had WNMU back to within 14 midway through the quarter, but it was just too much MSU. They added nine more points to their lead to open up a 56-33 lead entering the fourth quarter.

MSU used a quick 7-0 run to start the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

Twelve players scored at least a two points to power the balanced MSU attack. Liz Cathcart put together a game-high 16 points and nearly made it a double-double with eight rebounds. Hannah Reynolds reached double-figures in scoring with 12 points. Three other players scored at least eight points. MSU shot well from the field making 32-61 (53), 4-16 (25) from three and 12-16 (75) from the foul line.

WNMU made 17-54 (32) from the field, 5-16 (31) from three and 6-9 (67) at the foul line. MSU used a strong 26-4 edge on points off turnovers, 18-2 on second-chance points, 46-18 advantage on points in the paint to take the victory and used a big 44-19 advantage on the glass.

The Lady Mustangs will hit the road this coming week to finish out the regular season as they will play at Texas A&M-Kingsville on Thursday starting at 5:15 p.m. and then on Saturday at Angelo State starting at 2 p.m. Both start times are Central Time.
