Fields Scores Game-High 22 Points at Javelinas

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Junior Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado) posted her fifth 20-point game of the season Thursday as she went for 22 as the Western New Mexico University women's basketball team used a strong second half, but it wasn't enough to overcome the big first half by Texas A&M-Kingsville as the Javelinas posted the 70-42 Lone Star Conference victory.

Fields went 7-17 from the field, 2-6 from three and 6-7 from the free throw line. She also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Senior Jade Botelho (Honolulu, HI/Iolani) added seven points, senior Melody McLaughlin (Tucson, AZ/Mountain View) with six and freshman Rachel Francisco (Seattle, WA/Holy Names Academy) rounded out the four that scored at least five points as she went for five.

Fields tied the game at two a minute in when she connected on a jumper. After a 5-0 spurt by Texas A&M-Kingsville (7-20, 4-15 LSC), Fields converted a three-point-play near the midway point of the quarter before the Javelinas used a 7-0 run to open up a 14-5 lead entering the second quarter.

The run reached 13-0 as the Javelinas used back-to-back three-pointers by Kristina Kana to open up a 20-5 advantage. McLaughlin snapped the run with a pair of free throws to trim the deficit back to 13, but Texas A&M-Kingsville refused to let off the gas as they added seven more points to their lead before halftime to hold a 33-13 lead.

Botelho opened the scoring in the second half for WNMU (1-26, 1-18 LSC) with a layup 39 seconds in, just to watch the Javelinas come charging right back. They went on another quick 7-0 run and ended up taking a 55-31 lead into the final frame.

Botelho started the fourth quarter just like she did the third with a layup right off the bat. The Javelinas wasted little time answering right back and they kept the pressure up on their way to grabbing the victory.

Angelica Wilson paced the Javelinas with 13 points and added a double-double with 12 rebounds. Emmeri Archer and Sadie Russell added nine points apiece, as seven players scored at least six points. Russell almost had a double-double as well with eight rebounds.

WNMU made 12-45 (27) from the field, 2-17 (12) from three and 16-19 (84) from the foul line. Texas A&M-Kingsville countered making 26-62 (42), 5-20 (25) from three and 13-18 (72) at the foul line.

Texas A&M-Kingsville used a strong advantage on points in the paint (34-12) and bench points (29-2).

WNMU will close out the 2017-18 season when they will play at Angelo State on Saturday starting at 2 p.m. Central Time.
