Men's Basketball Fall in Rematch

Silver City, N.M – For the second time in less than a week, the Mustangs of Western New Mexico matched up against former RMAC foe New Mexico Highlands, this time unable to get past the Highlands defense.

Cold shooting by the Cowboys and a team effort by the Mustangs gave them a 22-8 advantage at the ten-minute mark through the first half. Leston Gordon (Tunapuna, Trinidad and Tobago/Tunapuna Government Secondary) was a wall for Western, coming up with two key blocks and three rebounds in the first half while Willie McCray (Clovis, NM/Clovis/Westwind Prep Academy) led with seven points.
Highlands put the pressure on defensively, quieting Western's shooting for the remainder of the half and cutting their lead to 34-28 with a minute left. A last minute three by Highlands gave Western a slim 36-33 advantage going into the break.

The second half was tight, both teams traded shots but the Mustangs maintained the lead. Back-to-back threes from Davis Wade (Jackson, MS/Will C Wood) got the crowd to their feet, and the Mustangs took a 59-50 lead with just over six-minutes left in the game.

On a Western foul, the Cowboys made good on their free throw to take their first lead of night at 61-59. Eddie Giron (Monterrey, Mexico/Harmony Science Academy) had the answer, drawing a foul and draining his free throws followed by a jumper to keep the game close. With 0.28 left to play and the game tied at 67, a late steal by the Cowboys, saw the last opportunity for the Mustangs to score disappear with the clock running out and a final score of 70-67 in favor of the visitors.

Four players finished in double-digits for the Mustangs, with senior Willie McCray (Clovis, NM/Clovis/Westwind Prep Academy) at the top with 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting. Giron added 14 points going 5-for-9, while JR Woodson and Wade rounded it out with 10 and 11 points respectively. Gordon finished with six rebounds on the night.

The Men's team will take a break for the Thanksgiving holiday then hit the road to take on Texas A&M-International on Nov. 27, before returning to home court on Dec. 4 to face off against Northern New Mexico.
