Softball Suffers Heartbreaking Loss in Extra Innings Against Cameron

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Down to their final home games of the season, the Lady Mustangs played inspired and had one of the top teams in the conference on the ropes. After coming back to tie the game, Cameron finally outlasted the Western New Mexico University softball team 8-7 in 10 innings Friday in Lone Star Conference action.

Backed by a season-high 17 hits, WNMU (1-42, 0-25 LSC) refused to go away multiple times against the third best team in the LSC in Cameron (30-15, 18-6 LSC). Freshman Lyana Waddell (Winkelman, AZ/San Manuel) set the tone early in the circle keeping the Aggies off the board over the first two innings.

Cameron was able to scratch out a run in the third when a ball was hit to second and senior Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) went home and on the play at the plate, it was close, but the Aggies were just able to score the run for the 1-0 lead.

In what became a theme of the game, the Lady Mustangs always seemed to answer right after Cameron tallied a run. In the home half of the inning, sophomore Deidre Vega (Bayard, NM/Cobre) opened the frame with a single. After an out, Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) added a single to short and then an error moved Vega up to third. Another error brought in the tying run when junior Valeria Luna (El Paso, TX/Irvin) hit a pop up on the infield, the pitcher caught it and tried to turn a double play at first, but her throw was in the dirt and allowed Vega to tie the game at one.

The Lady Mustangs snagged their first lead of the game in the fourth. Senior Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) drilled a 1-1 pitch to left for a leadoff double. Following an out, sophomore Carolyn Castillo (Silver City, NM/Silver City) singled and then redshirt sophomore Brooklyn Misenhimer (Tucson, AZ/Sahuaro) came through with a double to right-center to bring in the go ahead run and a 2-1 lead.

Cameron answered right back plating five runs on six hits in the fifth to move in front 6-2.

The Aggies then elected to bring in Alyssa Osterdock to pitch and WNMU went to work on offense. Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) was hit-by-pitch for the 14th time this year to start the frame. After she stole second to improve her numbers to 8-8 on the year, a ground out was followed by a single up the middle by junior Mariangela Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View) to place runners at the corners. Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) placed a perfect squeeze bunt to mark the second out, but brought her twin sister Linzy in with the third WNMU run. Sophomore Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) took the next pitch and singled up the middle to plate Garcia. WNMU would add one more run when Vega singled up the middle to leave Cameron with a 6-5 lead after five.

The Aggies added a run on a double play in the sixth to go back in front by two at 7-5. The Lady Mustangs kept coming getting a run in both the sixth and seventh innings to keep the game alive.

In the sixth, Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) began things with a single to third. A ground out moved her to second and after a pop out, Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) came through with the big hit as she singled to center to trim the deficit to one at 7-6.

In the seventh, the Lady Mustangs needed a run to keep the game going and they did just that. Castillo had a strong at-bat to begin the frame working out a full count walk. Misenhimer then was set to do a sacrifice bunt, but her bunt was placed perfectly past the pitcher and the third baseman allowing her to reach to put runners at first and second. Vega singled and on the play, the left fielder had an error to bring pinch-runner freshman Thalia O'Neill (Bloomfield, NM/Bloomfield) home to knot the game at seven. A fielding error followed to load the bases with still no outs. Somehow Cameron was able to get out of the jam as Bethany Hines worked her magic in the circle getting a strikeout, fielder's choice ground out back to her and then a foul out to right to send the game to extra innings.

WNMU nearly won the game in the ninth with two quick outs, junior Aryana Gutierrez (Glendale, AZ/Deer Valley) and Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) both singled before a strikeout sent the game to the 10th.

Brenna Busby delivered the big hit for the Aggies as she hit a 2-1 pitch just over the right field fence for a solo home run and 8-7 lead. Down to their last chance, WNMU had two quick outs on two pitches before Maldonado kept the game alive with a single to center. Junior Victoria Arganda (San Bernardino, CA/Pacific) nearly prolonged the game as she came in to pinch-hit and she nearly had a single up the middle, but the ball went off the shortstop and then right to the second baseman who was on the second base bag to retire the side and the game.

WNMU held a 17-14 edge on hits with the Aggies committing four errors to one for the Lady Mustangs. Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad), Misenhimer and Vega all had three hit games to lead WNMU. Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad), Maldonado and Castillo added two hit games. Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) drove in two runs. Brenna Busby, batting leadoff for Cameron had three hits, while Paige Daino and Abby Warren drove in two runs apiece.

In the circle, Bethany Hines tallied the win (22-6) for the Aggies as she ended up going 9.1 innings and allowed just two earned runs. Waddell went the first 4.1 innings and gave up five earned runs. Redshirt senior Domi Shone (Gold Canyon, AZ/Mesquite) went the final 5.2 innings and took the loss (0-16) after allowing just two earned runs.

Both teams will return to action tomorrow (Saturday) with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. Seniors Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad), Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) and Domi Shone (Gold Canyon, AZ/Mesquite) will be honored between games for senior day.
