Softball Nearly Wins Final Home Game on Senior Day

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Following a tough first game of the day, the Western New Mexico University softball team came back strong, backed by a terrific start in the circle by redshirt senior Domi Shone (Gold Canyon, AZ/Mesquite). Cameron was able to take game one 12-3 in five innings and then 2-1 in the second game Saturday in Lone Star Conference action.

It was senior day for Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad), Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) and Shone as the three were honored between games.

In the opener, Cameron (32-15, 20-6 LSC) jumped out early with a three-run homer by Brenna Busby in the first inning. WNMU (1-44, 0-27 LSC) recovered in the second inning answering with their own home run as sophomore Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) launched a two-run shot to left field to score Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) and trim the deficit to 3-2 after two.

The Aggies were able to create separation with a big third inning plating six runs on five hits to take a 9-2 advantage.

The Lady Mustangs used three hits and an error to get a run back in the home half of the third. Junior Aryana Gutierrez (Glendale, AZ/Deer Valley) started the frame with a single and after Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) reached on an error, junior Mariangela Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View) added a single up the middle to load the bases with one out. After the second out was recorded, Maldonado drove in her third run of the game singling on a 0-1 pitch to center to leave Cameron with the 9-3 lead. Bethany Hines avoided any further damage in the circle as she got a fly out to end the threat.

Cameron tallied a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take the 12-3 run-rule victory in five innings.

Cameron outhit WNMU 14-5 with Maldonado tallying two hits and driving in all three runs. Kaylyn Smith posted three hits to lead the Aggies, while Busby drove in five.

In the circle, Hines started and went the first four innings to pick up the win (23-6) as she allowed just one earned run. Freshman Thalia O'Neill (Bloomfield, NM/Bloomfield) started for WNMU and ended up with the loss (0-11) after allowing three earned runs in a third of an inning. Freshman Lyana Waddell (Winkelman, AZ/San Manuel) tossed the final 4.2 innings and gave up just four earned runs.

Game two was a pitcher's duel between Shone and Hines, as she started the second game as well for Cameron.

Paige Daino started the game strong for the Aggies as she hit a solo home run in the first. That ended up being the only hit Shone would allow until a single in the fifth. Cameron did cash in an error in the second inning to move in front 2-0.

While Shone was limiting the Cameron offense, WNMU had a tough time finding traction against Hines. In the second, Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) started the frame with a single and later moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. A line out and ground out, though, kept her at second.

In the third with two quick outs on the board, Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) kept the inning alive with a four-pitch walk. Junior Valeria Luna (El Paso, TX/Irvin) added a single and Garcia a single as well to load the bases, but a pop out on the infield left the bases loaded.

In the fourth, Maldonado began the frame with a single and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Redshirt sophomore Brooklyn Misenhimer (Tucson, AZ/Sahuaro) cashed in the RBI chance as she singled to right to score Maldonado and leave WNMU down just one at 2-1.

In the sixth, Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) singled and moved all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt as no one covered third base on the play. Sophomore Carolyn Castillo (Silver City, NM/Silver City) then hit one to shortstop and she was able to get the out at home before Lacy could cross the plate leaving the Aggies with the 2-1 advantage.

Shone worked out of a jam in the seventh as Cameron got a runner to third with one out, but on a ball hit to second, Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) threw home to get the out and keep the deficit at one.

In their last at-bat, WNMU wasn't able to get a runner on with a pair of ground outs and then a line out to shortstop ending the game.

WNMU outhit Cameron 6-2 with Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) posting a two hit game and Misenhimer driving in the run. Daino and Kaytlyn Kizarr had the only two hits for the Aggies with Daino and Hines driving in the runs.

In the circle, Hines collected her second win (24-6) of the day going all seven innings and allowing the one earned run. Shone capped her career at home strong tossing a stellar complete game giving up just one earned run to take the hard-luck loss (0-17).

WNMU will conclude the 2017 season this coming Friday and Saturday as they will play at Texas A&M-Kingsville with a single game Friday at 5 p.m. and then a doubleheader on Saturday at noon. All start times are Central Time.
