Softball Comes Close in Game Two Against Lions

COMMERCE, Texas – Freshman Thalia O'Neill (Bloomfield, NM/Bloomfield) pitched a solid game two Friday, but it wasn't enough as the Western New Mexico University softball team fell in both games to Texas A&M-Commerce 10-1 in five innings and 5-0 with the first game counting as a Lone Star Conference contest.

In the first game, the opening inning was big once again for Texas A&M-Commerce (30-15, 14-10 LSC) as they plated eight runs on six hits to open the 8-0 lead.

Redshirt senior Domi Shone (Gold Canyon, AZ/Mesquite) came on in relief and was able to quiet the Lion bats the rest of the game, allowing just a run in the second and another in the fourth.

WNMU (1-41, 0-24 LSC) got on the board in the fourth. Junior Mariangela Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View) opened the frame with a single and after a ground out moved her to second, sophomore Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) singled to right field to put runners at the corners. Garcia tried to score on a wild pitch, but was erased at the plate, while Maldonado moved up to third. Sophomore Carolyn Castillo (Silver City, NM/Silver City) took advantage as she singled through the left side to bring in the run.

After TAMUC scored their run in the fourth to go up 10-1, the game would end that way in the fifth. The Lions held a 10-4 edge on hits with Garcia, Castillo, Maldonado and redshirt sophomore Brooklyn Misenhimer (Tucson, AZ/Sahuaro) all tallying hits. Baylea Higgs, Precious Thompson and Jordyn Sharp had two hit games to lead the Lions, while Vanessa Avina drove in four with her pinch-hit grand slam in the first.

In the circle, Courtnee Jones went all five innings to pick up the win (3-4) for TAMUC as she allowed just one earned run. Freshman Lyana Waddell (Winkelman, AZ/San Manuel) started for WNMU and ended up with the loss (1-16) as she went the first third inning of the game and allowed seven earned runs. Shone tossed the remaining 3.2 innings and allowed two earned runs.

In the second game, O'Neill held the power Lions to just five runs on seven hits. After WNMU went 1-2-3 to start the game, TAMUC tallied two runs on two hits for the early 2-0 lead.

The Lady Mustangs had two on in the third with junior Valeria Luna (El Paso, TX/Irvin) getting hit-by-pitch and senior Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) singling to center, but Luna was erased on the play. Junior Aryana Gutierrez (Glendale, AZ/Deer Valley) walked to put runners at first and second, before a ground out ended the threat.

The Lions extended the lead to 4-0 with two runs in the third.  WNMU looked to be in good shape in the fifth. Sophomore Deidre Vega (Bayard, NM/Cobre) walked to start the inning and after a pop out, Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) walked. A line out followed for the second out, but Garcia kept the frame alive with a single to center to load the bases. TAMUC escaped the jam with a fly out to center to remain in front 4-0.

TAMUC tallied their final run of the game in the sixth and WNMU wasn't able to break through despite getting a runner on in both the sixth and seventh innings.

The Lions held the 7-5 edge on hits as senior Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) had a two hit game. Kinsie Hebler and Mariah Jameyson recorded two hit games for TAMUC.

In the circle, Hebler went the first 5.1 innings to get the win (10-2) allowing just five hits and four walks. Katie Dean tossed the final 1.2 innings to get her third save of the season and gave up just a hit-by-pitch. O'Neill was solid for the Lady Mustangs in taking the loss (0-10) as she gave up just four earned runs in going all six innings.

WNMU will close out their home portion of the 2017 season this coming week when they welcome in Cameron with a single game on Friday at 2 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon.
