Tennis to Host Cameron, Midwestern State for Senior Weekend

SILVER CITY, N.M. – It's been over two months since either Western New Mexico University tennis team has had a home match this year. That will all change this weekend when the two tams host Cameron on Friday at 9:30 a.m. and Midwestern State on Saturday at 8 a.m. in Lone Star Conference action.

Five Mustang seniors will be honored Saturday in Tristan Da Lio (Casablanca/Academie des Hauts de Nimes), Sascha Brechtel (Neustadt an der Weinstraße, Germany/Kurpfalz Gymnasium Mannheim ), Jean-Laurent Pageault (Perrigny, France/Academi des Hauts de Nimes), Gemma Goodland (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia/Maribyrnong College Sports Academy) and Annely Heinze (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Techologico de Monterrey). Below is a recap of their careers up until this point.

Da Lio won nine singles matches in her first year in 2014-15, going 9-7 at No. 3. He also added nine doubles victories, going 7-6 with Vladimir Gnilozubov (Kazakhstan, Astana/Kazakhstan), with most of their matches coming at the top flight (6-4). During the 2015-16 season he posted 11 singles victories, with eight coming at No. 2 and three at No. 3. He and Gnilozubov continued their strong doubles play going 16-7 with every match being played at No. 1. So far this season he is 8-6 in singles play, with every match being played at No. 4. In doubles with Gnilozubov, they are the third ranked duo in the nation and have rolled up an impressive 13-3 mark at the top flight. Entering this weekend he has 28 singles wins and 38 doubles wins.

Brechtel started his career strong as he was one of five Mustangs to posted double-digit singles victories during the 2013-14 campaign in which he won 10, posting five wins at No. 3, three at No. 6 and two at No. 5. He added seven doubles victories, with six coming with teammate Omar Lopez at No. 3. After missing the ensuing season due to injury, he returned in 2015-16 and compiled two singles victories at No. 4 and four doubles wins with two coming with Blayze O'Keefe (Las Vegas, NV/Odyssey Charter). So far this year he has nine singles victories, tied for second-most on the team, with six wins coming at No. 5, two at No. 6 and the other at No. 3. In doubles he has two wins with O'Keefe at No. 1 and No. 3. Entering this weekend he has 21 singles victories and 13 doubles wins.

Pageault began his career just like Brechtel's winning 10 in his first season during the 2013-14 campaign winnings five at No. 4, four at No. 2 and the other at No. 3. In doubles he added 12 victories, six with Rodrigo Almeida and five with Lopez. He added nine singles victories his sophomore year, with eight of them coming at No. 2. In doubles, he won 13 matches, with none coming with Pablo Santibanez (Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico/CETYS Universidad) as they went 9-0 at No. 3. His junior year again witnessed nine singles victories with all of them coming at the top flight. In doubles he collected 15 wins with 13 coming with Liam Fraboulet (Lycée Kerraoul, Paimpol, France/Lycée Kerraoul) at No. 2. So far this season he has nine singles victories, with eight coming at No. 2. In doubles with Fraboulet they have 12 wins, all coming at No. 2. Entering this weekend he has 37 singles victories and 52 doubles wins.

Goodland tallied eight singles victories, seven coming at No. 4 last year in her first season with the Lady Mustangs. In doubles she came away with 10 victories, the most on the team, with teammate Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado) at the top flight. So far this year she has four singles wins coming at No. 3 and four doubles victories with fellow senior Heinze at the top flight including a recent win against Tarleton State. Entering this weekend she has 12 singles victories and 14 doubles wins during her time at WNMU.

Heinze led the team in her first season with 11 singles victories, 10 coming at No. 5 and the other at No. 4 that included ending the season on a five-match winning streak. In doubles she won 11 matches with nine coming with teammate Diamond Morrill (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) as they posted six wins at No. 3 and the other three at No. 2. So far this season she has five singles wins, all of them coming at No. 2 and four doubles victories at the top flight with Goodland. Entering this weekend she has 16 singles victories and 15 doubles wins during her time at WNMU.

It will be a pair of important matches this week as WNMU will face Cameron on Friday starting at 9:30 a.m. and then against Midwestern State at 8 a.m. on Saturday. Both teams are nationally ranked on the women's and men's side.
