TexAnns Power Past Softball on Friday

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Tarleton State University showed no ill effect following their long road trip out to Southwest New Mexico as they tallied 36 runs in a doubleheader against the Western New Mexico University softball team to take game one 11-2 and game two 25-1, both in five innings in Lone Star Conference action on Friday afternoon.

Although WNMU (1-29, 0-14 LSC) dropped the first game 11-2, the hits were fairly close with TSU (23-13, 10-7 LSC) holding a slight 10-9 advantage. The offense started right away for the TexAnns in the first inning when Nyka Wood lifted a 1-1 pitch over the right-center field fence for a three-run homer and 3-0 lead. The Lady Mustangs responded in the home half.

Senior Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) jumped on a 0-1 pitch to lead off the home half with a deep triple to right. Junior Valeria Luna (El Paso, TX/Irvin) then hit one back to the pitcher, but her throw to first was in the dirt and as she reached on the error, Granger came home to trim the deficit to 3-1. Junior Mariangela Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View) added a single and senior Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) walked to load the bases, but Haley Freyman worked her way out of the jam getting a ground ball hit back to her that she turned into a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning.

Tarleton State moved the lead to 7-1 with four runs on four hits in the second inning. The Lady Mustangs again threatened during their at-bat with sophomore Yasmeen Gastelum (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle) singling, but was erased on a double play. Junior Aryana Gutierrez (Glendale, AZ/Deer Valley) added a single and after Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) was hit-by-pitch, Luna singled through the right side and WNMU tried to get a run home, but Gutierrez was cut down by a good throw from right field to leave it a 7-1 game after two.

WNMU added a run in the third when sophomore Carolyn Castillo (Silver City, NM/Silver City) ripped a double to right-center that scored Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) a she singled to shortstop earlier in the inning.

TSU got the run right back in the fourth to move ahead 8-2 and then they took advantage of a pair of errors in the fifth to tally three more runs and hold a 11-2 lead. WNMU got two runners on in their last at-bat with Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) singling and Gastelum being hit-by-pitch before Freyman helped the TexAnns end the game in a run-rule victory with a strikeout to take the 11-2 win.

Seven Lady Mustangs had at least a hit with Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) and Gutierrez each going 2-2. Castillo tallied the only RBI. TSU was led by a 3-4 game from Meghann Wrinkle, while Wood, Kadyn Kirkpatrick and Avery Mullendore had two hit games. Wood tallied five RBI.

In the circle, Freyman tallied her 11th win (11-5) of the season for the TexAnns as she allowed two earned runs. Freshman Lyana Waddell (Winkelman, AZ/San Manuel) went all five innings for WNMU and ended up with the loss (1-11) as she gave up 11 runs, eight earned and added four strikeouts.

Game two featured lots of hits by Tarleton State and also some fielding miscues by the Lady Mustangs to help the TexAnns take the 25-1 victory. TSU held a 21-4 edge on hits, but eight errors by WNMU led to 17 unearned runs.

TSU started the scoring right away in the first, plating seven runs on four hits, along with two WNMU errors. A big error with two outs early in the inning kept the frame alive, as the TexAnns added a walk, hit-by-pitch, double, triple, double following that play to provide the big scoring inning.

The TexAnns added five in both the second and third and then eight in the fourth to build a 25-0 lead. WNMU had a chance in the third with Luna and Garcia getting on via walks before a strikeout and ground out ended the inning. The Lady Mustangs broke through for a run in the fifth.

Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) began the inning with a single through the left side. After a ground out moved her to second, Garcia singled to center to put runners at the corners. Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) recorded the RBI as she was up next and hit a pop up to second, but the second baseman wasn't able to catch it and she threw to second for the force out and Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) scored to provide the final margin of 25-1.

Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) had two hits to lead the offense, while Marisa Flores went 4-4 with four runs scored and nine RBI to lead the TexAnns. Mullendore went 4-5 with four runs scored and five RBI batting ninth as the seven through nine hitters for TSU went 11-12 with 12 runs scored and 16 RBI.

In the circle, Jordan Withrow tallied her seventh victory (7-5) of the season for TSU allowing one earned run and seven strikeouts. Freshman Thalia O'Neill (Bloomfield, NM/Bloomfield) started for WNMU and ended up with the loss (0-8) as she went 3.2 innings and gave up 20 runs, eight earned. Waddell went the final 1.1 innings and allowed five runs, but none were earned.

WNMU and TSU will warp-up their series Saturday morning with another doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. The first game of the day will be a Lone Star contest, while the final game of the day will be a non-conference contest.
