Texas A&M-Commerce Starts Early in Getting Past Lady Mustangs

COMMERCE, Texas – Texas A&M-Commerce opened the game outscoring the Western New Mexico University women's basketball team 24-7 through the first quarter on their way to defeating the Lady Mustangs 81-40 Saturday morning in Lone Star Conference play.

Texas A&M-Commerce (6-4, 3-1 LSC) made 12 more field goals than WNMU (0-9, 0-4 LSC) as they went 28-71 (39) from the field, 5-20 (25) from three and held a huge advantage at the foul line connecting on 20-27 (74). The Lady Mustangs made 16-55 (29) from the field, 3-20 (15) from three and 5-6 (83) at the foul line.

Three Lady Mustangs scored at least eight points led by 10 from freshman Cassandra Vickery (Tularosa, NM/Tularosa). She also added two steals. Juniors Takiyah Lopez (El Paso, TX/Chapin) with nine points and Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado) with eight were next in scoring. Junior Ashton Carrasco (El Paso, TX/Canutillo) pulled down a team-best six rebounds.

The Lady Lions opened the game on an 8-0 run over the first three minutes. Freshman Rachel Francisco (Seattle, WA/Holy Names Academy) capped the spurt with a jumper to get WNMU on the board. After pushing the lead to 10 at 12-2, the Lady Mustangs went on a 5-0 run with Carrasco hitting a jumper and Lopez hitting one from downtown making it just a 12-7 game with four minutes to go in the quarter.

That's when Texas A&M-Commerce took over as they used a 12-0 run over the final few minutes to open up a 24-7 lead through the first 10 minutes.

It ended up turning into a 17-0 run as the Lady Lions posted the first five points of the second quarter. Fields helped WNMU pull back to within 16 three minutes into the second when her jumper left the Lady Lions with a 30-14 lead.

Texas A&M-Commerce controlled play the rest of the half as they outscored WNMU by 10 points for a 51-25 lead at the break.

It was a low scoring third quarter for both teams with the Lady Lions holding a 11-5 edge to post a 62-30 lead heading into the final frame. Vickery, redshirt junior Lucy Benning (El Paso, TX/El Paso) and Lopez accounted for the 10 points for the Lady Mustangs in the fourth quarter before the Lady Lions took the win.

Texas A&M-Commerce held the advantage on points off turnovers (22-7), second-chance points (22-2), bench points (36-16), points in the paint (42-16) and fastbreak points (17-4).

Lauren Parker grabbed seven rebounds, London Holland and Davis each had four assists, while both Jasmyn Eckerman and Brianna Wise tallied three steals.
