SILVER CITY, N.M. – The offense was on fire to start Sunday for the Western New Mexico University softball team as they racked up 12 runs and redshirt junior
Domi Shone (Gold Canyon, AZ/Mesquite) allowed just a hit to give the Lady Mustangs a 12-0 win in five innings against Colorado State University-Pueblo. The ThunderWolves rebounded in the second game coming back for the 7-4 win to split the weekend Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series.
WNMU (19-24, 15-13 RMAC) made quick work of CSU-Pueblo (8-29, 7-19 RMAC) in the opener, exploding for eight runs in the second to put the game out of reach. While the offense piled up 12 runs on 15 hits, Shone limited the ThunderWolves to just a hit in tossing her second complete game shutout of the weekend.
The Lady Mustangs came out swinging in the first inning. Senior
Krystal Castillo (Silver City, NM/Silver City) and junior
Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) opened with back-to-back singles. After a ground out moved both runners up,
Krystal Castillo (Silver City, NM/Silver City) came in on a wild pitch and then an RBI single by sophomore
Mariangela Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View) moved the lead to 2-0.
WNMU then broke the game open in the second.
Krystal Castillo (Silver City, NM/Silver City) opened the eight-run inning with the first RBI as she singled to right.
Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) followed that up with a two-run single to center. After a pitching change, junior
Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) singled to set the stage for Garcia who hit the first pitch way over the left-center field fence for a three-run homer. Freshman
Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) capped the scoring with a two-run single to push WNMU to the 10-0 lead.
Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) closed the scoring in the fourth with her two-out, two-run double to left field to provide the final margin of 12-0.
The Lady Mustangs piled up 15 hits, with eight players recording a hit.
Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) and Garcia each had three-hit games and both also had four RBI contests. Moriah Turney had the only hit for the ThunderWolves. That ended up being the only base runner for CSU-Pueblo, as Shone retired the next 15 batters in order.
Shone dominated in the circle to collect her 12
th (12-10) victory of the season allowing just the one hit and no walks, along with two strikeouts in five innings of work. Hope Davalos started and took the loss (6-14) for the ThunderWolves allowing six runs in 1.1 innings.
CSU-Pueblo rallied in the second game to pound out 16 hits and take the 7-4 win. They opened the scoring with a run in each of the first two innings. WNMU came back to tie in the third.
With runners on second and third and two outs,
Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) delivered the big hit, although no one knew on the field exactly what had happened. She hit the ball to deep center and the center fielder appeared to nearly catch the ball, but trapped it again the fence to be ruled a double and two RBI for Granger to tie the game at two.
The ThunderWolves regrouped right away in the next inning, plating four runs in the fourth to take a 6-2 lead. They added another in the fifth to expand the lead to 7-2.
The Lady Mustangs wouldn't go down easy. In the sixth, Maldonado doubled to left to bring in pinch-runner junior
Breanna Aker (El Mirage, AZ/Apollo). Later,
Krystal Castillo (Silver City, NM/Silver City) lined a shot to center that was caught, but allowed freshman
Clarissa Moreno (Tucson, AZ/Desert View) to tag from third and score leaving WNMU down three, 7-4.
Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) nearly tied the game in the next at-bat as she hit one deep to right that was barely caught by the right fielder to end the inning. Madison Wolfe worked a 1-2-3 seventh to secure the win for CSU-Pueblo.
CSU-Pueblo outhit WNMU 16-6, with
Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) and Maldonado collecting two-hit games to lead WNMU, as
Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) drove in a pair. Three ThunderWolves had three-hit games, while Dora Hernandez drove in three.
In the circle, three Lady Mustangs saw action. Freshman
Tiana Salazar (Peoria, AZ/Peoria) started and went the first 1.1 innings and allowed two earned runs. Senior
MaryJo Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) went the next two innings and ended up with the loss (2-10) giving up three earned runs. Shone finished the game logging the final 3.2 innings and giving up two runs, one earned. Wolfe picked up the win (2-8) for CSU-Pueblo going all seven innings and allowing four earned runs.
WNMU will hit the road this coming weekend as they will play at Fort Lewis College with doubleheaders on Saturday starting at noon and Sunday at 11 a.m.
