No. 28 Men’s Tennis Secures Seventh Straight RMAC Tournament Title

PUEBLO, Colo. – The No. 28 Western New Mexico University men's tennis team leaves an indelible mark on the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in their last turn through following a 5-2 win over Colorado Mesa University to win their seventh straight RMAC Tournament crown.

This comes on the heels of winning their seven straight RMAC regular season title. Following their 4-0 regular season tally and 2-0 conference mark, WNMU leaves the RMAC having gone 37-0 in regular season matches and 14-0 in tournament play over the past seven years in which they have won both titles.

Doubles were close, with the scores ending up 8-5 in all three matches. WNMU (15-9) took the top flight behind the No. 24 doubles pair in the nation in redshirt sophomore Tristan Da Lio (Casablanca/Academie des Hauts de Nimes)/sophomore Vladimir Gnilozubov (Kazakhstan, Astana/Kazakhstan). Junior Sascha Brechtel (Neustadt an der Weinstraße, Germany/Kurpfalz Gymnasium Mannheim )/sophomore Pablo Santibanez (Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico/CETYS Universidad) added a win at No. 3. Junior Jean-Laurent Pageault (Perrigny, France/Academi des Hauts de Nimes)/freshman Liam Fraboulet (Lycee Kerraoul, Paimpol, France) fell just short at No. 2.

CMU (17-11) tied the match early in singles when Pageault ended up retiring in his match at the top flight after dropping the first set, 1-6. The Mustangs then claimed wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 for the victory. Gnilozubov and Santibanez each won in straight sets. Gnilozubov took the 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 3, while Santibanez added a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 6. Da Lio had to go three sets to win his match at No. 2, coming back from a 1-6 loss in the first set. He then dominated from that point on taking the next two sets, 6-3, 6-4.

Without the automatic bid into NCAA Regionals this year with not enough teams in the conference to qualify for the auto bid, the Mustangs will have to wait to see if they will make the field. WNMU is currently fourth in the region, as the top four teams make the field. The NCAA selection show will take place Tuesday, May 3 at 6 p.m. Mountain Standard Time.
