Seventh Inning Comeback Gives Softball a Split in RMAC Pod Play on Friday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – As the Western New Mexico University softball team has been known to do this season is having a flair for the dramatics. That was the case again in the seventh inning against UC-Colorado Springs posting three runs to come-from-behind for the 6-5 victory. WNMU then finished the week with a 6-2 loss to Colorado Christian in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

WNMU (17-22, 13-11 RMAC) looked to be in trouble versus UCCS (16-12, 13-10 RMAC) trailing 5-1 after the first three innings. The Lady Mustangs plated their run in the third when junior Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) delivered a sacrifice fly to score senior Alicia Enriquez (Gilbert, AZ/Mesquite) who doubled to open the inning.

Beginning in the fifth, the Lady Mustangs began to slowly chip away at the deficit. Freshman Yasmeen Gastelum (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle) hit the first pitch of the fifth inning to left for a solo home run leaving the deficit at three, 5-2.

In the sixth, sophomore Mariangela Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View) got the offense moving with a one-out double. With two outs, Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) doubled to right-center to score Garcia and move WNMU to within two at 5-3.

Then came the seventh when WNMU came all the way back to take the victory. Freshman Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) singled to start the frame and quickly came home when Enriquez homered to left-center to knot the game at five. After an out was recorded, junior Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) singled prompting a pitching change. The offense didn't stop with the new pitcher in there with Garcia singling after a 12-pitch at-bat to put runners at first and second. Senior Thailyza Ramirez (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) pushed in the go-ahead run when she doubled to right-center on a 1-2 pitch to score Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) for the 6-5 lead.

Freshman Tiana Salazar (Peoria, AZ/Peoria) worked around a hit-by-pitch in the bottom of the seventh to secure the victory.

Each team ended up with 11 hits with Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad), Garcia and Enriquez posting two-hit games and Enriquez led the way with two RBI. Three Mountain Lions had two hits and Hoffman drove in two.

Redshirt junior Domi Shone (Gold Canyon, AZ/Mesquite) started for WNMU and went the first 3.0 innings allowing five runs, three earned. Salazar was strong in relief in picking up the win (6-4) tossing the final 4.0 innings and allowing just four hits, along with two strikeouts and no walks. Chitkowski went the first 6.1 innings and took the loss (3-5) giving up all six runs. Fonseca pitched the final two-thirds of the seventh.

In the second game, WNMU again had troubles with CCU (9-27, 8-16 RMAC) as the Cougars tallied 13 hits in claiming the victory.

CCU opened the scoring with two runs in the second inning. WNMU got on the board in the third. Maldonado began the frame with a double to right. With two outs recorded, Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) singled through the left side to bring in Maldonado for the 2-1 CCU lead.

Redshirt freshman Brooklyn Misenhimer (Tucson, AZ/Sahuaro) tied the game up in the fourth with a solo home run to left.

The Cougars went ahead for good in the fifth when they brought in three runs on five hits to open a 5-2 lead. They added one more in the sixth to go on and take the eventual 6-2 victory.

The Lady Mustangs threatened in the fifth getting singles from both Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) and Ramirez, but a fly out later ended the inning.

Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) led the offense with two hits, while Romero led the Cougars with three hits and also drove in two runs.

Senior MaryJo Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) went all seven innings and ended up with the loss (1-8) for WNMU allowing six earned runs and also had four strikeouts. Diffenderfer grabbed the win (4-6) for the Cougars as she also tossed a complete game giving up just the two earned runs.

WNMU will return home next weekend when they will face Colorado State University-Pueblo with doubleheaders both Saturday and Sunday.
