PUEBLO, Colo. – Senior quarterback
Mitch Glasmann (Temecula, CA/Chaparral) came into the game just four touchdowns short of 100 for his career and in the process of tossing his fourth of the day Saturday against Colorado State University-Pueblo, he also set the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference touchdown mark. Despite the big day on offense, it wasn't quite enough against the No. 10 ranked team in the nation as CSU-Pueblo held off the Mustangs for a 42-27 RMAC win.
"I've been truly blessed with a lot of skilled teammates and a lot of hard workers over the last four years," Glasmann said. "While the record will only show my name, I really do owe it to all the guys who have blocked for me and all the guys who caught the passes and made me look good. We have a lot more we want to accomplish this year, so this is only the beginning."
Not only did Glasmann set the TD mark, he broke his career-high in passing yards going for 501 yards. That leaves him just 597 yards from setting the RMAC career record for passing yards.
The game looked to be a good old fashioned defensive struggle early on as the game was scoreless through the first quarter of action.
WNMU (2-2, 1-1 RMAC) then in a blink of an eye put the first points on the board when Glasmann hit
Xavier Ayers (Albuquerque, NM/Albuquerque) in stride down the middle of the field for an 86-yard touchdown pass on third-and-nine to give the Mustangs the 7-0 lead nine minutes to go before halftime.
That would then start an offensive explosion before the teams went to halftime.
The ThunderWolves (3-1, 2-0 RMAC) came right back in four plays and went 70 yards to tie the game at seven. Not to be outdone, the Mustang offense went right back to work.
Against one of the top defenses in the RMAC, the Mustangs continued to pile up yardage through the air with Glasmann completing passes of 15 to Ayers, 11 to
Larry Young II (San Diego, CA/Morse HS) and nine to
Kasey Allison (Moreno Valley, CA/Canyon Springs) before Young II snagged a 45-yard strike for the score and a 14-7 WNMU lead with five minutes to go in the opening half.
CSU-Pueblo answered back on one play as AJ Thompson hit Deontrae Cooper for a 75-yard score to knot the game back up at 14.
The ThunderWolves then took advantage of a defensive play on the next drive, as a tipped ball led to an interception and six plays later, a Cameron McDondle five-yard TD run gave CSU-Pueblo their first lead of the game at 21-14.
With still two minutes to go before halftime, it left plenty of time for the Mustang offense to go back to work. The big play came on third-and-20 at the CSU-Pueblo 40 as Glasmann eluded pressure and found
Marques Rodgers (Gardena, CA/Serra) for 27 yards and a first down. A couple plays later, Glasmann found
Evan Beebe (Chula Vista, CA/Mater Dei Catholic) across the middle for a 13-yard touchdown to tie the game at 21 at the break.
In the third quarter, the ThunderWolves got the ball first and didn't slow down as they went back in front on a 19-yard TD pass for the 28-21 lead. CSU-Pueblo then moved ahead by a pair of scores after forcing a WNMU three-and-out, they took advantage of good field position to score in three plays for the 35-21 lead midway through the third quarter.
Although the Mustangs wouldn't lead again the rest of the way, they came close multiple times to either tying or taking the lead.
On the ensuing drive, WNMU marched right down the field and went in for the touchdown as Glasmann found Young II for 18 yards and after a failed extra point try it was an eight-point game, 35-27. That would also be the record-breaking play, as it was Glasmann's fourth touchdown pass of the game to give him 100 in his career and break the old RMAC record of 99.
The real turning point of the game came on the next few drives. The WNMU defense came up big on the next series, as they were able to sack Thompson with
Avery Crump (Los Angeles, CA/Verbum Dei) making the play and also forcing the fumble, which he subsequently recovered giving WNMU the ball at the CSU-Pueblo 21. WNMU would end up having to try and settle for a field goal, but the attempt was blocked leaving it still an eight-point game with five minutes to go in the quarter.
The Mustang defense stood tall again on the ensuing possession and the offense looked poised to score on the next drive.
Moving the ball down to the CSU-Pueblo 11, WNMU set up shop to begin the fourth quarter. A short rush, a sack and 10-yard completion to Rodgers setup a fourth-and-five at the six. Glasmann took the snap and looked for the end zone, but the pressure got to him for the sack ending the drive.
The ThunderWolves came back with a burst on offense moving 84 yards on four plays to record a touchdown and expand the lead to 42-27 with 12 minutes to play in the game.
WNMU would get deep into CSU-Pueblo territory a couple of more times, but each time the ThunderWolves defense came up with the stop as CSU-Pueblo escaped with the 42-27 victory.
WNMU outgained CSU-Pueblo, 516-486, with most of the Mustang offense coming through the air (501). Glasmann ended up completing 37-of-60 for 501 yards and four touchdowns. His main targets were Ayers with eight catches for 173 yards and a score, Young II with 11 catches for 134 yards and two scores and Rodgers with 12 catches for 81 yards. On the ground Rodgers had 47 yards on 16 attempts with a long carry of 13 yards.
Darius Guillory (Temecula, CA/Chaparral) led the defense with 11 stops (seven solo), while
Aaron Leauma (San Marcos, CA/Mission Hills) added seven tackles, a sack and 1.5 tackles for loss. The nation's sack leader Morgan Fox added three more for the ThunderWolves.
Thompson threw for 220 yards and two scores for CSU-Pueblo, with Cooper catching four for 103 yards and a TD. Cameron McDondle went for 193 yards on 24 carries and three touchdowns.
WNMU will remain on the road this coming Saturday when they will play at Fort Lewis College beginning at noon. The Skyhawks improved to 2-0 in RMAC play with a 49-7 win over New Mexico Highlands earlier today.
