Tiurina Collects All-RMAC Academic Player of the Year Honors; Joined by Three Teammates on List

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Ganna Tiurina (Kiev, Ukraine/M.M. Gromov #227) made it a clean sweep Wednesday as she was already named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Year, now she can add All-RMAC Academic Player of the Year as the awards were announced by the conference office.

Tiurina, a sophomore from Kiev Ukraine, holds a 3.73 GPA and is majoring in kinesiology. Tiurina racked up 17 singles wins this season, all at the top flight. She went a perfect 7-0 against conference opponents. In doubles with teammate Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado), they won 14 doubles matches at the top flight. At one point they had a nine-match winning streak, including a 7-0 mark against RMAC teams.

Newell, a First-Team selection to the All-Conference awards, added First-Team All-Academic to her solid season. Newell, also a sophomore from Las Vegas, Nev., holds a 3.83 GPA and is majoring in psychology. She ended the 2013 campaign with 13 singles wins at the No. 2 position and teamed with Tiurina for their 14 doubles victories. She won seven straight RMAC singles matches.

Doris Berberic (Lower Hutt, New Zealand/Hutt Valley High School), already a recipient of the RMAC Summit Award for the highest GPA in her sport, added First-Team Academic to that list. Berberic, a senior from Lower Hutt, New Zealand, has a perfect 4.0 and is majoring in psychology. Berberic and freshman Diamond Morrill (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) were named to the All-RMAC Second-Team for their doubles play. They tallied nine wins during the season, with four of those wins coming inside the conference during the regular season and tournament play. She also won four singles matches.

Dena Irvin (Farmington, NM/Farmington High School), a junior from Farmington, N.M., was named to the Second-Team. She holds a 3.60 GPA and is majoring in social science. Irvin won two singles matches at the No. 6 position and she also competed in six doubles matches in 2013.

The WNMU women's tennis team won the RMAC regular and tournament championships to advance to the South Central Regional.
