SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University football team will look to reclaim the Warrior Helmet Trophy when they battle in-state rival New Mexico Highlands University this Saturday inside Ben Altamirano Field.
The Cowboys (2-8, 1-7 RMAC) won last year's meeting in Las Vegas, 58-0. Two years ago in Silver City, WNMU (3-6, 3-5 RMAC) rallied to come away with a 25-18 win.
Emmanuel Lewis has thrown for 3,181 yards and 18 touchdowns to 10 interceptions this season for NMHU. His main target has been Ricky Marvray who has 52 catches for 614 yards and a touchdown. Michael Harrison and Lajuantae Hicks lead the team in receiving scores with five apiece. Dominique Ferrell has rushed for 371 yards on 65 attempts with three touchdowns to lead the team. DiAmaal Holmes leads the defense with 89 tackles, with 37 coming solo, along with two interceptions and a fumble recovery. The Cowboys have lost seven straight with their last win coming at home on Sep. 21 against Fort Lewis, 31-20.
The Mustangs will look to build off of their 38-14 win over Black Hills State last week in Spearfish. WNMU scored 24 unanswered points to end the game with the victory. Senior Abe Macias leads the rushing attack going for 831 yards on 179 carries and five scores.
Mitch Glasmann (Temecula, CA/Chaparral) has thrown for 2,594 yards for 22 touchdowns and eight interceptions, completing 191-of-355. Senior
Ronnell Pompey (Los Angeles, CA/Fairfax Senior HS) has brought in 60 passes for 1,163 yards and 10 touchdowns. He still ranks in the top-10 in the nation in receiving yards per game. Senior
Jerrald Hines (Los Angeles, CA/) leads the defense with 61 tackles, 30 solo, along with seven tackles for loss, two sacks, a forced fumble and fumble recovery.
