Western New Mexico University's football program saw tremendous individual success this season, with several Mustangs earning Lone Star Conference postseason awards. From a breakout freshman quarterback to impact receivers and stalwart linemen, these honorees helped drive the Mustangs throughout the year. Below is a look at each player who received recognition — and how their performances made a difference.
Connor Ackerley (Tempe, Arizona/Corona Del Sol High School) – Offensive Freshman of the Year & Honorable Mention
Freshman quarterback
Connor Ackerley (Tempe, Arizona/Corona Del Sol High School) capped off a stellar debut season by being named the LSC Offensive Freshman of the Year, in addition to earning All-Conference Honorable Mention. Ackerley was a workhorse all season, starting all 11 games and completing 253 of 397 passes for 2,999 yards and 30 touchdowns, posting a rating of 146.07. His arm strength, accuracy, and leadership were on full display — notably during his seven-touchdown performance in a single game, which tied a conference mark and set the tone for his rookie campaign. With poise beyond his years, Ackerley has quickly become the offensive centerpiece for WNMU and looks poised for even greater things in the years ahead.
Deuce Zimmerman (Anchorage, AK/East Anchorage High School) – First Team Offense
Wide receiver
Deuce Zimmerman (Anchorage, AK/East Anchorage High School) earned First Team All-Conference honors thanks to his explosive receiving production. In just six games, he hauled in 44 catches for 676 yards, averaging 15.36 yards per catch, and found the end zone 10 times. Zimmerman's big-play ability made him a favorite target for Ackerley, and his knack for breaking coverage created consistent momentum for the Mustangs' offense. His speed, contested-catch skill, and playmaking presence elevated the passing game and made him one of the most dangerous offensive threats in the LSC.
Davey Morales (Queen Creek, AZ/Queen Creek High) – First Team Offense
Joining Zimmerman on the First Team, receiver
Davey Morales (Queen Creek, AZ/Queen Creek High) proved to be a model of consistency and reliability. Over 11 games, he recorded 57 receptions for 762 yards, averaging around 13.37 yards per catch, and scored 7 touchdowns. Morales' polished route running and dependable hands provided Ackerley with a steady outlet throughout the season. Whether in critical third-down situations or in the red zone, Morales was often the go-to playmaker, giving defenses no room to cheat and helping keep drives alive.
Daniel Gonzalez (Norco, CA/Norco High School) – Honorable Mention
On the offensive line,
Daniel Gonzalez (Norco, CA/Norco High School) earned Honorable Mention for his solid performance protecting the quarterback and opening lanes in the run game. Gonzalez, listed on the roster as a 6'2" lineman, provided a steady presence in pass protection and helped anchor the line for much of the season. His physicality in the trenches and ability to sustain blocks played a critical role in both the passing and rushing attacks, giving the Mustangs a foundation to build off of for future seasons.
Jose Chavez (Phoenix, AZ/Corona Del Sol High School) – Honorable Mention
Another key piece of the Mustangs' offensive front,
Jose Chavez (Phoenix, AZ/Corona Del Sol High School) also earned Honorable Mention honors. At 6'3" and 305 pounds, Chavez brought strength, technique, and consistency to every snap. Though not always in the spotlight, his durability and effort were essential in both protecting Ackerley and enabling rushing opportunities. His development this year sets him up as a core leader on the offensive line going forward.
Anthony Flores (Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union High School) – Honorable Mention
Receiver
Anthony Flores (Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande Union High School) rounded out the Mustang receiving corps with an Honorable Mention nod. He appeared in all 11 games and made 53 catches for 611 yards, averaging 11.53 yards per reception, and scored 9 touchdowns. Flores flashed in key moments, particularly in the red zone, where his reliable hands and field awareness were often rewarded with scores. His contributions added valuable depth to the passing game and gave defenses another serious threat to account for.
Colten Swanson (Chandler, AZ/Perry High School) – Honorable Mention
On the defensive side,
Colten Swanson (Chandler, AZ/Perry High School), a sophomore lineman, was recognized with an Honorable Mention. According to the 2025 stats, he totaled 42 tackles, including 4 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks, across the season. Swanson's disruptive presence in the trenches consistently pressured opposing offenses and provided the Mustangs' defense with a dependable interior force. His motor and ability to make plays behind the line underscore his value, and he's clearly a cornerstone for future defensive success.
A Season to Build On
This group of Mustang standouts represents a bright spot in Western New Mexico football's season — young talent meeting opportunity and delivering at a high level. From Ackerley's breakout freshman year to Zimmerman and Morales' clutch receiving, and the unsung heroes in the trenches and on defense, these honors reflect not just individual talent but a collective rising trajectory for the program.
As WNMU looks ahead, these recognitions offer more than just accolades: they're proof of progress, potential, and the foundation of a team ready to compete at a higher level.
