COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Six Western New Mexico University football players were named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference All-Conference squads that were announced by the conference office Tuesday.
Headlining the awards for the Mustangs were
Mitch Glasmann (Temecula, CA/Chaparral),
Marquis Sumpter (Oceanside/Falbrook Union HS) and Bernard Williams. Glasmann was named Offensive Freshman of the Year, while Sumpter and Williams were both named to the First-Team.
Glasmann had a banner year for WNMU, setting Division II era (since 1993) school records for passing yards and touchdowns in a season. He threw for 3,139 yards and 27 touchdowns, completing 249-of-426. He broke the marks that were previous set last year by
David Ingram (Irvine, CA/Woodbridge HS) who amassed 2,927 yards passing and 24 touchdowns. He had two games where he threw for over 400 yards and three others that went for over 300. His highest total came against Colorado Mines when he passed for 435 yards and four touchdowns which helped him be named RMAC Offensive Player of the Week after WNMU won that game, 54-28. He threw four touchdowns three times, against Sul Ross, Fort Lewis and Colorado Mines which were all wins. He ranked 28
th nationally in total offensive yards at 284.18 per game and 45
th in passing efficiency with 135.53.
Marquis Sumpter (Oceanside/Falbrook Union HS) ended up leading the RMAC in all major receiving categories including yards per game (107.3) and receiving touchdowns (13). He played and started all 11 games this season amassing 1,180 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns. He collected four, 100-plus receiving games this season, including a high of 176 against Western State, in that same game he also had his top touchdown performance of three. He caught 11 passes twice (Black Hills State and Colorado Mines). He ranks nationally in several categories including ninth in receiving yards per game, and 22
nd in receptions per game. He was named to the Beyond Sports Network honorable mention team at the start of the season, as well as being named to the Preseason All-RMAC Offensive squad. He was a First-Team All-RMAC recipient as a junior. For his career, he had 29 touchdowns and 2,458 receiving yards.
Williams was the main defensive back for the Mustangs in terms of passes defended and broken up. He led the team in both of those categories coming away with nine breakups and 12 passes defended. He also led the team in interceptions with three for 57 yards. He played and started all 11 games and was third on the team in total tackles with 59, while he led the team in solo stops with 38. In addition, he recovered one fumble and had 1.5 tackles for a loss of two yards. He had three interceptions last year, 10 pass breakups, 13 passes defended, along with two fumble recoveries and 45 total tackles.
Donald Byrd (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach Poly) was named to the Third-Team offense, along with
Michael Coe (Carlsbad, CA/Carlsbad). Byrd was second on the team in receiving categories including catches with 65, yards with 847 and touchdowns with seven. He also attempted five passes, completing four for 103 yards. He was third on the team in most receiving categories last year including catches with 32, yards with 405 and touchdowns with two. Coe started each game along the offensive line helping the team rush for 1,503 and 16 touchdowns and throw for 3,335 and 27 scores.
Zachary Dembrowski (Lake Elsinore/Elsinore HS) rounds out the Mustangs on the All-Conference teams as he was named to the Third-Team defense. He was stellar along the defensive line for WNMU, leading the team in total tackles with 69, tackles for loss with 11.5 for 79 yards and sacks with nine for 68 yards. He was second in the conference in sacks.
The Mustangs finished the season 4-7 overall and 3-6 in the RMAC.
