AMARILLO, Tex. -- The Western New Mexico University men's golf team was able to finish strong after a rough first day at the Ryan Palmer Invitational placing 12th out of 17 teams as the third and final round wrapped up Tuesday afternoon.
After the first day of the tournament, the Mustangs were in 13th place with a two-round total of 598. The second day, they were able to play solid and move up a position to finish 12th overall with a three-round total team score of 892. RMAC schools Colorado School of Mines (856) and CSU-Pueblo (857) finished one-two, with the Orediggers overtaking the ThunderWolves during the final round to take the title.
Individually, freshman
Calum Hill (Kinross, Scotland/Kinross HS) did the best for the Mustangs tying for 13th with a three-round total of 215 (76-72-67), finishing strong with a last round of 67.
The rest of the Mustangs were close in scoring with freshman
Brendan Shannon (Silver City, NM/Silver HS) tying for 52nd with a 226 (80-73-73). Following Shannon were junior
David Metz (Tucson, AZ/Canyon del Oro HS) and freshman Buzz Perales both tying for 63rd with a three-round total of 228 (Metz 77-76-75), (Perales 73-76-79) and senior
Ryan Pitzel (Winnipeg, MB/Maples Colliegiate HS) tied for 73rd after carding a 233 (75-77-81).
Next up for the men's golf team is the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate hosted by New Mexico State October 22nd-23rd starting at 8:00am.
