Football Shuts Down Mountaineers

Marquis Sumpter collected eight receptions for 176 yards and three touchdowns Saturday against Western State.
GUNNISON, Colo. – The Western New Mexico University football team scored 14 points in both the second and third quarters on their way to shutting out Western State Colorado University, 28-0, Saturday afternoon in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

Neither team could break through in the first quarter, with Western State Colorado University (WSCU) getting the first chance five minutes in. After a fumbled punt return, WSCU (0-7, 0-5 RMAC) took over at the Western New Mexico University (WNMU) 20. The defense held tough, giving up only five yards and on fourth-and-five the field goal from 33 yards missed.

Finally, towards the end of the first half, WNMU (4-3, 3-2 RMAC) began to break through. Beginning at their 43, Mitch Glasmann (Temecula, CA/Chaparral) found Marquis Sumpter (Oceanside/Falbrook Union HS) on a pair of big passing plays, one for 37 and the other for 20 that went for a touchdown and after Josh McIntire (El Cajon, CA/West Hills) added the extra point it was 7-0 with four minutes left in the second quarter.

The Mustang defense forced a quick three-and-out on the ensuing drive and the offense went back to work. Glasmann found Donald Byrd (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach Poly) for a 15-yard reception out near midfield and then Byrd threw a pass on the next play to Ronnell Pompey (Los Angeles, CA/Fairfax Senior HS) for a 32-yard pickup to the WSCU 14. After getting a first-and-goal at the one following a defensive holding penalty on third down, John De La Rosa (Vinton, TX/Canutillo HS) went in for the rushing touchdown and McIntire was good again on the extra point for a 14-0 lead with just two minutes before the break.

WNMU almost scored in the final few minutes, when Bernard Williams intercepted a pass at midfield and returned it the Mountaineer 42. But, four incompletions turned the ball over on downs and ended the first half with WNMU still up 14-0.

After the teams traded possessions in the second half, WNMU got things rolling again midway through the third with the ball at their 40. After a short one-yard rush and an incompletion, Glasmann hit Sumpter for a 59-yard touchdown strike to push the lead to 21-0 after another successful McIntire extra point.

With still time to play in the third, WNMU posted the final score of the game. Beginning again out near midfield at the WSCU 44, the Mustangs moved right down the field. A roughing the passer penalty moved the ball to the 39 of WSCU and then a personal foul on the Mountaineers pushed the ball to the 25. Glasmann hit Byrd for 21 yards on the next play and later, Glasmann again found Sumpter for a two-yard touchdown pass to make it 28-0 with just two minutes left in the third.

WNMU dominated throughout in the stats, picking up 354 yards of offense to 211 for WSCU. The Mountaineers also turned it over five times to two for the Mustangs. Glasmann hit 14-of-30 on his pass attempts for 238 yards and three touchdowns to one interception. Sumpter was the main target, pulling in eight for 176 and three touchdowns. De La Rosa led the ground attack chewing up 35 yards on 17 carries and one touchdown. Defensively, Jerald Hines and Zachary Dembrowski (Lake Elsinore/Elsinore HS) led with eight tackles apiece, as Hines added a sack and of his tackles, seven were solo.

WNMU will return home this coming Saturday when they will host Adams State University inside Altamirano Field with kickoff set for 12 p.m. New Mexico Highlands defeated the Grizzlies, 34-20, earlier today.
