Inexperience and bad decisions took a toll on WNMU's men's golf team in the Peaks Classic Tuesday as the Mustangs couldn't break the 300 barrier for the third consecutive round. WNMU recorded rounds of 303-310-303 for a 10th place finish in the 15-team event. This event doubled as the RMAC opener for the season. The tournament was held at Grandote Golf Course in LaVeta, Colorado.
WNMU's arch-rival UC-Colorado Springs cruised to an easy victory in the Peaks and had no trouble out-distancing the next closest opponent, Fort Lewis, by 14 shots. Springs got rounds of 283-291- 292 for the simple win. Fort Lewis was second with a consistent 296-294-290. Host Wayland Baptist was third, eight shots behind the Skyhawks.
WNMU was led by senior Stev
Steven Maxwell (Glasgow, Scotland, Bearsden Academy), whose rounds of 71-78-75--224 tied for 17th place in the 76-player field.
Michael Lopez (Phoenix, AZ/North High School) (Phoenix, AZ, North High School, Phoenix College) shot 73 Tuesday to finish tied for 20th. Other WNMU scores included T41-
Oscar Sachs (Auckland, New Zealand, St. Kentigern High School), 76-77-79--232; T56-
Anders Friman (Stockholm, Sweden, Hersby Gymnasium), 78-81-80--239; and 60-
Patrick Beyhan (Albuquerque, NM, La Cueva High School) 80-82-79--241.
The Mustangs get the next week off for some much needed practice before heading to the RMAC-NSIC Crossover in Gothenburg, Nebraska in two weeks.
