Women's Golf Concludes Season

Defending national champion Nova Southeastern led from start to finish in the 72-hole NCAA Division II National Championships held at Longbow Golf Club. Like the Sharks, WNMU remained in the same spot the entire tournament, 12th place, despite shooting the best round of the tournament Saturday (349-344-335-324 – 1352). The Mustangs did beat two other teams in the final round however.

The winner of the tournament had their poorest score of the four rounds, 301 (17-over-par), but it was plenty strong enough to win by 40 strokes over closest competitor Rollins.

NSU finished 44-over par (298-285-296-301 – 1180) for the tournament. Rollins (306-306-302-306 – 1220) edged Florida Southern (317-302-303-299 – 1221) by one stroke and Tarleton State (311-305-306-300 – 1222) by two for second.

While the team led from the get-go, NSU senior Sandra Changkija, the national runner-up in 2009, erased a four-shot final-round deficit to take the individual title. She finished the tournament at even par (74-67-71-72 – 284).

Newberry College sophomore Maria Luz Besio had a four-shot lead heading into the final 18 holes, but struggled on the front nine with three bogeys, two double-bogeys and a quadruple-bogey. She did hold on to get second place and finish 6-over par (71-68-69-82 – 290).

Rollins' Joanne Coe, the 2008 champion, finished third at 11-over-par (74-70-77-74 – 295).

WNMU's Glynnis Price (Shiprock, NM, Shiprock High School, University of New Mexico) jumped three spots in the final round to finish tied for 49th and the top spot for the Mustangs (85-84-77-78 – 324). The other four WNMU players were bunched together to fill the 65th through the 68th positions.
