The Mustangs were ahead, 2-1, after doubles but couldn't hold on in singles. Sonoma State defeated WNMU, 5-4.
“We came out fairly well in doubles. Our No. 3 doubles had to come back from being down early in the set,” says head coach Erik Burton. “And our No. 1 doubles have been amazing throughout the weekend.”
Yair Banuelos (Mexico City, Mexico, Universidal del Valle de Mexico, Riverside Community College) and
Henning Thrien (Gelsenkirchen, Germany, Carl Friedrick Gaus Gymnasium, Hope International University), who hold the No. 1, spot topped Connor Olson and Taylor Bianco, 9-7. Yo
Yoeri VanSpeybroeck (Nevele, Belgium, Viy Handels en Sport Institoot) and
Francisco Damasio (Jundiai, Brazil, Centro Educational Sigma High School) battled throughout to come up with the 9-8 victory.
“We had some good results early on, but due to injuries and the fact that we were playing a tough team, our efforts fell a little short,” states Burton. “Every match was a battle to the end, and we can learn as a team from this loss and continue to build on it."
Banuelos and VanSpeybroeck tallied the lone points on the singles side. Both sunk their opponent convincingly. Banuelos earned the 6-2, 6-1 decision; VanSpeybroeck posted the 6-1, 6-1 victory.
