Mustangs Fall To Tough Competition

Junior Michael Lopez
Western New Mexico was the only Division II team in the 2010 Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate hosted by New Mexico State Monday and Tuesday. Head coach Kent Beatty knew it was going to be a tough battle against the 14 elite Division I programs, and it was just that…tough. Only one score of the 15 rounds, a 71 by Michael Lopez (Phoenix, AZ/North High School) (Phoenix, AZ, North High School, Phoenix College) in the opening round, was at even-par. The remaining scores were charged with the extra strokes.

Lopez followed the 71 with an 81 in the second and then a 75 to finish tied for 52nd with teammate Steven Maxwell (Glasgow, Scotland, Bearsden Academy) who carded 77-78-72–227. Lopez and Maxwell were the Mustangs' top finishers.

Patrick Beyhan (Albuquerque, NM, La Cueva High School) had slightly higher scores than his previous two tournaments. He tied for 67th after a 75-78-79–232 performance.

David Metz (Tucson, AZ, Canyon del Oro High School) and Oscar Sachs (Auckland, New Zealand, St. Kentigern High School) finished 71st (T) and 83rd respectively.

"The competition was good, but we certainly have no excuses for our play. It was just a bad outing and no one really stepped up to lead for us. We had three freshmen on the course this time out and you just have to take your lumps when you have that much inexperience playing," said Beatty. "We have a couple of months now to work out some kinks and I'm sure we will be better this Spring, "Beatty said.

New Mexico State's Tim Madigan tied for first, defending his title for a year ago. Madigan carded a final round score of 1-over par, 72, finishing the tournament at 5-under par, 208 (63-73-72). Tying along with Madigan for first-place was Matt Rawitzer of Idaho.

Kansas took the team title with a three-round score of 6-over par, followed by UNLV (+7), NM State (+12), Washington State (+13) and Idaho (+15).
