SILVER CITY, N.M. — The WNMU Mustangs (13-16) put up a spirited fight but ultimately fell 5–3 to Oklahoma Christian (26-6) at The Yard. While the Mustangs didn't come out on top, their offense was sparked by two impressive home runs, accounting for all their runs.
This back-and-forth contest saw Western NM battling hard against Oklahoma Christian. The Mustangs showed resilience, with standout moments from the home team keeping the game competitive.
Hannah Martinez (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad High School) got things rolling in the second inning with a solo shot to left field, leveling the score at 1–1 after Oklahoma Christian had scored on an unearned run. The game was tied at 1–1 through two innings of play.
Oklahoma Christian edged ahead in the third inning with Kallie Rupp's home run, putting them up 2–1.
In the fifth, the Mustangs clawed back as
Lauryn Carbajal (Tucson, AZ/Sunnyside High School) smashed a two-run homer, bringing
Addisen Byers (Albuquerque, NM/La Cueva High School) home and knotting the game at 3–3.
The sixth and seventh innings held no further scoring, pushing the game into extra innings. The visitors struck in the eighth with a two-run homer by Madi Drummond, which sealed the game.
Western NM couldn't find an answer in the bottom of the eighth, closing the game at 5–3 in Oklahoma Christian's favor.
Martinez's solo homer and RBI were pivotal, while Carbajal's two-run blast added to the Mustangs' efforts.
Alixe De Anda (San Tan Valley, AZ/Red Mountain High School) showed stamina on the mound, pitching a full game with 95 pitches over 8 innings.
Lanessa Morales (Vail, AZ/Cienega High School) demonstrated solid defense with five assists.
The Mustangs hold a 13-16 record, going 9-10 in conference play. Meanwhile, Oklahoma Christian stands at 26-6 overall and 18-3 in the conference.
Game 2:
SILVER CITY, N.M. — Western New Mexico (14-16, 10-10) pulled off a thrilling 13–11 victory over Okla. Christian (26-7, 18-4) on Sunday at The Yard. The Mustangs' bats were on fire, with three home runs powering a game-changing three-run seventh inning.
Okla. Christian jumped ahead early in the second with a two-run homer from Marti Yaerger, leaving Western New Mexico trailing 2-0 by the inning's end.
But the Mustangs weren't going quietly. In the third,
Abbi Markus (Sun City, AZ/Willow Canyon High School) launched a solo home run to cut into the deficit, closing the inning at Okla. Christian 2, Western New Mexico 1.
The fourth inning turned into a slugfest. Okla. Christian piled on seven more runs, thanks to homers from Kiley Brewster, Danae Lopez, and Maci George. Western New Mexico answered back with two runs, highlighted by
Lauryn Carbajal's (Tucson, AZ/Sunnyside High School) two-run shot, but still faced a 9-3 deficit.
The Mustangs found their groove in the fifth inning, unleashing a five-run onslaught.
Marleigh Manns (Los Lunas, NM/Los Lunas High School) smashed a double to bring in two, and
Hannah Martinez (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad High School) added a two-run single, narrowing Okla. Christian's lead to 11–8.
Western New Mexico kept chipping away in the sixth, adding two more runs.
Ciara Spencer (Gallup, NM/Gallup High School) crossed the plate on a clutch single from
Jenna Peters (Lake Elsinore, CA/Temescal Canyon High School), bringing them within one at 11-10.
The seventh inning belonged to the Mustangs.
Ciara Spencer (Gallup, NM/Gallup High School) stepped up and smashed a walk-off three-run homer, sealing the comeback and the win for Western New Mexico, 13-11.
Okla. Christian's explosive fourth inning threatened to put the game out of reach, but the Mustangs' resilience shone through.

Marleigh Manns (Los Lunas, NM/Los Lunas High School) drive a two-RBI double, followed by
Hannah Martinez's (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad High School) RBI single, setting the stage for Spencer's dramatic final-inning heroics.
Ciara Spencer (Gallup, NM/Gallup High School) was unstoppable, driving in three runs with her homer among her five trips to the plate.
Lauryn Carbajal (Tucson, AZ/Sunnyside High School) played a pivotal role, scoring twice and driving in four with a homer and a double.
Hannah Martinez (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad High School) chipped in with two hits and two RBIs in four at-bats, while
Abbi Markus (Sun City, AZ/Willow Canyon High School) contributed three hits, including a homer, and an RBI in her four at-bats.
Next up, Western New Mexico heads to Richardson, Texas, to take on UT Dallas on Friday, March 27, at 2 p.m., aiming to carry this momentum on the road.
