Albuquerque, N.M. — The Western New Mexico University men's tennis team opened the spring portion of its schedule on Saturday afternoon with a road match against the University of New Mexico at the UNM Tennis Complex. The Mustangs competed hard throughout the day, highlighted by a strong singles victory from Christopher Lund-Kühl.
WNMU saw action across all three doubles positions as the Mustangs looked to establish early momentum.
Christopher Lund-Kühl delivered WNMU's highlight of the day with an impressive straight-set win at No. 5 singles, defeating his opponent 7–5, 6–3. Lund-Kühl displayed consistency from the baseline and composure in key moments to secure the Mustangs' lone team point.
At No. 1 singles,
Mael Houee (Rennes, France/Lycee Saint Martin (France)) competed from the opening court but fell 6-0, 6-2, while
Yannik Rogulski (Madunice, Slovakia/Archbishop's High School of Bishop P. Jantausch) took the court at No. 2 battling hard but losing a close game 6-2, 6-4.
Jack Semper (Hackney, London, UK/Stoke Newington School) at No. 3 lost a tricky battle 6-1, 6-1 gaining valuable experience against strong competition.
Benjamin Vriends (Mierlo, Netherlands/Sint Joriscollege) represented the Mustangs at No. 4 singles but fell 7-5, 6-3, and
David Guta (Bucharest, Romania/Liceul Teoretic C.A. Rosetti (Romania)) rounded out the lineup at No. 6 battling hard but falling 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 1 doubles, Houee and Rogulski faced a tough UNM pairing, falling 6–3. The No. 2 team of Semper and Lund-Kühl battled but came up short in a 6–0 decision. At No. 3 doubles, Guta and Djamel Dine-Bey showed competitiveness before dropping a 6–3 match.
The Mustangs will look towards their next match against Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ, January 23rd.
