SILVER CITY, N.M. – Western New Mexico University freshmen
Lauryn Carbajal (Tucson, AZ/Sunnyside High School) and
Antonya Lucero (Albuquerque, NM/La Cueva High School) have been recognized for standout seasons, earning spots on the Lone Star Conference (LSC) Third Team All-Conference. Carbajal was also named to the LSC All-Freshman Team, making her one of the top first-year players in the league.
Lauryn Carbajal (Tucson, AZ/Sunnyside High School), from Tucson, Arizona, started all 40 games she played and established herself as one of the most consistent hitters in the lineup. She posted a .381 batting average with 48 hits, including 10 doubles, 2 triples, and 9 home runs, while driving in 35 runs. She finished the season with a .706 slugging percentage and a .426 on-base percentage. Defensively, Carbajal committed just two errors all season, finishing with a .967 fielding percentage.
Antonya Lucero (Albuquerque, NM/La Cueva High School), an Albuquerque native, was another key contributor in her first season. She played in 50 games with 47 starts, hitting .329 with 48 hits, 7 homers, and 27 RBIs. Lucero also swiped 12 bases in 13 attempts and brought energy to both sides of the field. She handled 205 chances in the field with 76 putouts, 108 assists, and just 21 errors, finishing the season with a .898 fielding percentage.
These two freshmen made a big statement this season, and the future is bright for Mustang Softball.
