LUBBOCK, Texas – April 18, 2025 – The Western New Mexico University women's tennis team took on a tough Lone Star Conference opponent Friday morning, falling 7-0 to No. 20 Lubbock Christian at the Penny Gullo Tennis Center.
In doubles action,
Ana Sofia Montero Villegas (Caracas, Venezuela/Colegio San Martin de Porres) and
Caini Wang (New Taipei City, Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Nangang Vocational High School) battled in the No. 1 spot, dropping a close 6-4 match. At No. 2,
Andreea Arnautu (Laval, Quebec, Canada/College Laval) and
Lucia Carmena (Alcala de Henares, Spain/Cet Alcala) were defeated 6-0. WNMU was unable to field a team at No. 3 doubles, giving LCU the default win and the early point.
In singles play, Arnautu faced No. 40 Anastasiia Opolska at the top position, falling 6-3, 6-1. Montero Villegas played at No. 2 and was defeated 6-1, 6-1. Wang competed at No. 3 but came up short in straight sets, while Carmena was topped at No. 4. WNMU forfeited the No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions.
Western New Mexico moves to 3-11 overall and 1-6 in conference play, while Lubbock Christian improves to 15-5 overall and 5-2 in the LSC.
The Mustangs will look to bounce back quickly as they head to Odessa, Texas to take on Texas Permian Basin on Saturday, April 19 at 8 a.m. MT / 9 a.m. CT in another Lone Star Conference matchup.
