Mustangs Get Bitten by the Rattlers in San Antonio

San Antonio, Texas – The Western New Mexico University Women's Tennis team continued their 2025 spring season with a road matchup against the St. Mary's Rattlers in San Antonio. Despite a hard-fought effort, the Mustangs fell 0-7 in their opening match of the week.

In doubles play, the pair of Andreea Arnautu (Laval, Quebec, Canada/College Laval) and Emma Lootens-Stael (Diksmuide, Belgium/French Touch Academy) were topped 6-2 by J. Ospanova and S. Sifuentes. Caini Wang (New Taipei City, Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Nangang Vocational High School) and Ana Sofia Montero Villegas (Caracas, Venezuela/Colegio San Martin de Porres) also fell 6-2 to S. Wu and G. Posito. Gabriella Blumberg (Casper, WY/Kelly Walsh High School) and Jenna Kastell (Bonn, Germany/TC Rot-Weiß Troisdorf) rounded out doubles action with a 6-0 loss to P. Garrote and A. Terlizzi.

Singles proved equally challenging for the Mustangs, as St. Mary's continued their strong showing.

  • No. 1: Andreea Arnautu (Laval, Quebec, Canada/College Laval) was defeated by S. Wu, 1-6, 1-6

  • No. 2: Ana Sofia Montero Villegas (Caracas, Venezuela/Colegio San Martin de Porres) fell to J. Ospanova, 2-6, 4-6

  • No. 3: Caini Wang (New Taipei City, Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Nangang Vocational High School) dropped her match to A. Terlizzi, 1-6, 1-6

  • No. 4: Emma Lootens-Stael (Diksmuide, Belgium/French Touch Academy) lost to P. Garrote, 0-6, 1-6

  • No. 5: Gabriella Blumberg (Casper, WY/Kelly Walsh High School) battled G. Posito but came up short, 3-6, 1-6

  • No. 6: Jenna Kastell (Bonn, Germany/TC Rot-Weiß Troisdorf) took on S. Sifuentes, falling 1-6, 0-6

While the scoreboard didn't tilt in WNMU's favor, the team continues to gain experience and prepare for a quick turnaround.

The Mustangs remain in San Antonio to face Our Lady of the Lake University on Saturday, March 29, at 6 p.m. MT.
