Lubbock, T.X. - Western New Mexico University's men's basketball faced off against Lubbock Christian University. The Mustangs dispatched the Chapparals handily, holding the lead throughout most of the game, with a final score of 81-76.
    Offensively, Western was led by
Matthew Okoye (Sugarland, TX/Stephen F. Austin High School) with 25 points(10-17) and
Carson Kelly (Chandler, AZ/Chandler High School) with 22 points(4-9) and led in rebounds with eight. They were followed by Aidan Wall, who scored 13 points(5-9). On the defensive side,
Donovan Black (Las Cruces, NM/Del Valle High School) led in rebounds with 12, while
James McCallum (Long Beach, CA./St. Bernard's High School) was a close second with 9 rebounds of his own.
    In the first half, the Mustangs were shooting 51.7%(15-29) from the field and 40%(4-10) beyond the arc. The Chaps were shooting 42.9%(12-28) from the field and 35.7%(5-14) from 3-point range. In the second half, Western kept up the lead, shooting 50%(14-28) from the field, and 36.4%(4-11) from 3-point range. On the opposing side, Lubbock Christian finished the second half shooting 37.1%(13-35) from the field and 23.1%(3-13) from beyond the arc. Western had a good day from the free throw line, shooting 88.2%(15-17), similarly the Chaps shot 85.7%(18-21) from the line. The Mustangs went on to win 81-76.
Western will be out on the road again next week playing West Texas A&M in Canyon, Texas. They will be tipping off January 16th, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. MDT.
