Silver City, N.M. - Western New Mexico University's men's basketball team faced off against the Mustangs of the University of the Southwest(N.M.). The Western Mustangs and the Southwest Mustangs were neck-and-neck through the entire game. Western started out down most of the first half and then took the lead in the second half, going on to win 67-60.
    Western was led by
Isaiah Marin (Phoenix, AZ/Copper Canyon High School) both offensively and defensively with 18 points (6-15), 9 rebounds and 3 steals. He was supported by
Carson Kelly (Chandler, AZ/Chandler High School) with 12 points (3-10) and
Jalen Williams (Hayward, CA/Shadow Mountain High School) who scored 11 points (4-6).
    In the first half, Western was shooting 33.33%(9-27) from the field and 25%(2-8) beyond the arc, on the other hand Univ. of the Southwest was 50.00%(12-24) from the field and 0.0%(0-2) from beyond the arc. In the second half, WNMU was 41.94%(13-31) from the field and 37.50%(3-8) beyond the arc, alternatively USW was 34.38%(11-32) from the field and 18.18%(2-11) from beyond the arc. The Western Mustangs averaged 69.2%(18-26) from the free-throw line, while the Southwest Mustangs only shot 57.1%(12-21). Western grabbed the lead about half way through the second half and never let go. They would finish the game leading 67-60.
The Mustangs will be on the road to take on the neighboring Lobos of the University of New Mexico. They will be tipping off December 14th, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. MDT.
