ALAMOSA, Colo. - Western New Mexico University's men's basketball team faced the Griffins of Westminster (UT) for the first game of the RMAC/LSC Conference Challenge on a snowy Friday afternoon in Alamosa, Colorado. Despite a solid first-half performance, the Mustangs were unable to maintain their momentum against the consistent and efficient Griffins, ultimately falling 83-50.
The Mustangs were led by Isaiah Marin (Phoenix, AZ/Copper Canyon High School), who scored 16 points on 7-17 shooting, and Carson Kelly (Chandler, AZ/Chandler High School), who added 9 points along with 5 rebounds. James McCallum (Long Beach, CA./St. Bernard's High School) made a notable impact off the bench, contributing 11 points in just 20 minutes of play.
In the first half, the Mustangs managed to keep the game within reach, shooting 44.00% from the field and 33.33% from three-point range. The game was tied five times and saw six lead changes. However, the second half saw a significant drop in performance for the Mustangs, as they managed only 37.04% from the field. Their 20 points in the paint and 6 fast break points were not enough to overcome Westminster's balanced attack.
The Mustangs will need to regroup quickly, as they face the host Grizzlies of Adams State in game two of the conference challenge on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at 1 p.m. MDT.
