Durango, Colorado - The Western New Mexico Mustangs Men's Basketball team continues their early 2024-2025 season in a battle at the Whalen Gymnasium in Durango against the Fort Lewis Skyhawks. The Western New Mexico would battle hard, putting up a fight until the end, but ultimately unable to finish the game on top, falling 62-71. The Mustangs performed well in their shooting era, averaging 43.9% (25-57), while the Eagles were 33.8% (25-74). The Mustangs were on top of the Skyhawks, with three-pointers averaging 42.9% (6-14) versus 21.1% (4-19). The Mustangs did fall to the Skyhawks in free throws with an average of 46.2% (6-13), while the Skyhawks averaged 68.0% (17-25).
Carson Kelly (Chandler, AZ/Chandler High School) would lead the Mustangs with a total of 14 points.
Yves Nkomba (Leeds, United Kingdom/Elevation Preparatory Academy) had a total of 12 points, right behind
Carson Kelly (Chandler, AZ/Chandler High School).
James McCallum (Long Beach, CA./St. Bernard's High School) would average 66.6% (2-3), while
Yves Nkomba (Leeds, United Kingdom/Elevation Preparatory Academy) and
Aiden Wall (North Richland Hills, TX/Keller Central High School) would average 50.0% (2-4) in free throws. Marko Nilivojevic played a defensive game, recording a total of two blocks.
Quincy Adams (Frisco, TX/Hamilton High School) pulled his weight with a total of seven rebounds for the Mustangs. Leading the team in assists,
Aiden Wall (North Richland Hills, TX/Keller Central High School) also gave his team a helping hand with a total of four.
The Skyhawks capitalized on Western New Mexico's 24 turnovers, generating 29 points off those miscues and establishing a strong lead early. Western New Mexico fought hard with nine second-chance points and four fast break points.
The Mustangs will stay in Durango, Colorado, for their second game in the Skyhawks Classic on November 16, 2024, against the Colorada Mesa. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. MT.
