DURANGO, Colo. – Western New Mexico University's men's basketball team faced the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks in their second game of the 2024 Skyhawk Classic Saturday evening from the campus of Ft. Lewis College. Despite a solid second-half comeback, the Mustangs ran out of time, falling 76-73.
The Mustangs were led by Carson Kelly (Chandler, AZ/Chandler High School), who scored 22 points on 8-14 shooting, including 3-7 from beyond the arc. Isaiah Marin (Phoenix, AZ/Copper Canyon High School) added 19 points, 6 assists and 4 steals. Nathan Jones (Leicester, United Kingdom/) also made significant contributions for the Mustangs, finishing with 12 points and 3 rebounds. Donovan Black (Las Cruces, NM/Del Valle High School) scored 8 points and grabbed 5 rebounds, and James McCallum (Long Beach, CA./St. Bernard's High School) added 4 points off the bench.
In the first half, the Mustangs struggled to keep the game close, shooting 30.56% from the field and 25.00% from three-point range. The Mustangs were a different team in the second half, shooting 51.52% from the field and 70.00% from the free throw line. The Mustangs scored 25 points off turnovers, but struggled from behind the arc, finishing at 23.8% (5-21).
The Mustangs will have some time to regroup before their next matchup against the Sul Ross State University Lobos in Alpine, Texas, on November 23, 2024, at 2 p.m. MDT.
