Box Score FLAGSTAFF, AZ – The Western New Mexico University Men's tennis team started their season with a doubleheader exhibition against Northern Arizona University. The Mustangs fought to the end, before falling in both matches 7-0.
"Today's matches were tough," Said WNMU Head Coach Jesus Baltazar. "We knew going in they would be that way, despite this the guys went in and gave everything they had with great energy and discipline."
MATCH ONE:
In doubles action, the duos of No. 1, Javier Romero and Brendan Lock, as well as, No. 2 Romain Malhomme and Lorenzo Orellano Buratti, both fell 6-1. No. 3 Alexandre Frigout and Mohjit Grewal put up a valiant effort before falling 6-4.
In singles, the Mustangs found some success but were unable to come away with any wins. No. 1 Romain Malhomme fought tough but ultimately fell in two sets 6-7,4-6(7-3). The results were the same for the remaining Mustangs, all falling in 2 sets, Alexandre Frigout 6-4, 6-1, Javier Romero 6-4, 6-4, Brendan Lock 6-3, 6-4, Mohjit Grewal 7-5, 6-2, and Lorenzo Orellano Buratti, 6-1,6-1.
MATCH TWO:
In doubles play, all three Mustang duos would show tremendous fight but were unable to come away victorious, with Mallhomme/Frigout falling 6-0, Lock/Grewal 7-6(7-4) and Romero/Orellano Buratti 6-4.
In singles, all matches would end in straight set losses for the mustangs. Frigout was edged 6-1, 7-6(11-9), Malhomme 6-3, 6-3, Romero 6-1, 6-2, Lock 6-2, 6-1, Grewal 6-2, 6-2, and Orellano Buratti 6-2, 6-1.
"We now have a good idea on what we need to work on to progress as a program. "said Coach Baltazar. "Overall, I'm proud of the guys today for competing against a top tennis program and showing what they can do."
Next up for the Mustangs will be Colorado College on February 4.
