SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Western New Mexico University Men's Tennis team traveled to San Antonio, Texas for two matchups against St. Mary's and Our Lady of the Lake. The Mustangs would fall to Saint Mary's 6-1 and Our Lady Of the Lake 4-0.
MATCH ONE vs ST. MARY'S
Saint Mary's would sweep the Mustangs to receive the doubles point. No.1 Yu Jhe Du (New Taipei City/Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School) and Brendan Lock (Cheyenne, Wyoming/Cheyenne South HS) would fall 6-2. No. 3 Lachlan Rowing (Canberra, Australia/Finigan School of Distance Education) and Lorenzo Orellano Burrati lost a close battle 6-4. Finally No. Patricio Larrea (Ambato, Ecuador/Atenas High School) abd Javier Romero (Tlalnepantla, Mexico/ETAC) lost 6-3.
In singles No. 4 Romero would score the sole point for the Mustangs winning 6-2, 6-6 (9-7).
No. 6 Paul Claussen (Balingen, Germany/Gymnasium Balingen) would fall first 6-3, 6-2. Larrea, playing at No. 1 lost 6-2, 6-2. No. 5 Lock was defeated 6-2, 6-1. No. 2 Rowing would battle, but lose 6-1, 7-6 (7-3). No. 3 Du would keep things close before he lost 6-2, 3-6, 2-6.
MATCH TWO vs OUR LADY OF THE LAKE:
The Saints would claim the doubles point on the Mustangs with a clean sweep. No. 2 Larrea and Romero would fall 6-0. No. 3 Rowing and Buratti lost their match 6-2. Play No. 1 was Claussen and Du, but their match would go unfinished.
In singles, No. 4 Romero would be the first to fall 6-6, 6-0. No. 1 Larrea followed suit, losing 6-4, 6-0. Round out the finished matches was No. 3 Du who lost 6-3, 6-3. No. 2 Rowing, No. 5 Claussen and No. 6 Buratti would have their matches go unfinished.
The Mustangs next match will be in the LSC Tournament against No. 1 seed UT Tyler on Thursday April 20th (7:30 AM MT). The Mustangs come into the tournament as the No. 8 seed, looking to pull off the upset.
