ABILENE, TX – Western New Mexico University Men's and Women's tennis team started their fall individual season.
"Our men brought the energy and intimidation this weekend despite our number one player, Jonathan Vega (Fort Worth, TX/North Crowley HS), not being able to play due to a recent surgery," said Head Coach Alex Hunt. "Despite bringing the energy, though, the men lacked execution throughout the weekend."
In doubles, Yu Jhe Du (New Taipei City/Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School) and Javier Romero (Tlalnepantla, Mexico/ETAC) defeated DBU 8-6, but fell against HSU 8-7(5) and TWU 8-5. Lachlan Rowing (Canberra, Australia/Finigan School of Distance Education) and Paul Claussen (Balingen, Germany/Gymnasium Balingen) also went 1-2, with their win against DBU (8-2). Against HSU they lost 8-5 and against TWU 8-6.
Patricio Larrea (Ambato, Ecuador/Atenas High School ) and Brendan Lock (Cheyenne, Wyoming/Cheyenne South HS) beat DBU 8-6 and TWU 8-5 and lost against HSU 8-3. Lorenzo Orellano defeated HSU 8-6 and was defeated against DBU 8-0 and TWU 8-7(3).
In singles, Brendan Lock (Cheyenne, Wyoming/Cheyenne South HS) was the sole Mustang to go undefeated this weekend. In his match with HSU he went 5-7, 7-5, 10-7. Versus DBU it went 6-1,64 and with TWU it went three sets going 3-6, 7-5, 10-8.
"Shoutout to Brendan Lock (Cheyenne, Wyoming/Cheyenne South HS) for going undefeated in singles and therefore winning his flight" said Hunt.
Lachlan Rowing (Canberra, Australia/Finigan School of Distance Education), Patricio Larrea (Ambato, Ecuador/Atenas High School ), and Yu Jhe Du (New Taipei City/Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School) both went 2-1 on the weekend. Rowing defeated HSU 5-7, 7-5, 10-8, and DBU 7-5, 6-3. Larrea beat DBU 7-6(1), 6-2, and TWU 6-3, 7-5. He lost against HSU 6-4, 6-3. Du beat HSU 6-3, 6-1, and DBU 7-5, 2-6, 10-7. TWU beat him 6-3, 7-6(5).
"Although the several singles and doubles wins we had over the weekend are exciting to see, we certainly know that we have plenty to work on moving forward" concluded Hunt.
