Match Recap: Men's Tennis | | Dakota Spillers

Strong Outing By Vega Isn't Enough Against St. Mary's

Silver City, NM – The Western New Mexico University Men's and Women's tennis teams competed against St. Mary's. Both the men and women were defeated 6-1. 

"Jonathan got a huge win at No. 1 singles," said Hunt. "He handled himself well and played great against a really good St. Mary's player."

The Mustangs had a tough time in doubles, losing the point. No. 1 doubles team of Jonathan Vega (Fort Worth, TX/North Crowley HS) and Javier Romero (Estado de Mexico /Instituto Latino Canadiense, Interlaken, ETAC) played a good Rattlers team, winning 7-6(7-4). The No. 2 doubles team of Joaquin Delpino (Villa Maria, Argentina) and Yu Jhe Du (New Taipei City/Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School) were defeated 6-4. No 3. doubles duo Patricio Larrea (Ambato, Ecuador/Atenas high school ) and Brendan Lock (Cheyenne, Wyoming) would also fell 6-3. 

In singles, Vega was the sole Mustangs to win 6-2, 6-2. Romero would split sets after losing the first set 7-5. He would win the second set 6-2, but would be edged out 10-4.

Delpino had a hard fought match before his opponent would win 7-6(5), 6-4. Larrea battled throughout his match before losing 6-3, 6-3. Lock could not get much going before he would fall 6-2 and 6-3. Du faced a good opponent as he would be downed 6-2, 6-4.

The Mustangs will go to Arkansas-Fort Smith, April 15th and Cameron, on April 16th. Both matches will begin at 10:00am MST.
