Vega Has Strong Showings Despite Mustangs Falling In Two

Silver City, NM – The Western New Mexico University Men's and Women's tennis teams played against Arkansas-Fort Smith on Friday and against Cameron on Saturday. Against UAFS the men lost 4-3 anf against against CU they would fall  6-1. They are not 10-9 on the year.

Match Versus UAFS

"We took over the court in doubles and dominated," said Hunt. 

On Friday, April 15th, the Mustangs fell to UAFS 4-3. WNMU went to 10-8 on the year.

The Mustangs came out strong in doubles, winning the point. No. 1 doubles team of Jonathan Vega (Fort Worth, TX/North Crowley HS) and Javier Romero (Estado de Mexico /Instituto Latino Canadiense, Interlaken, ETAC) dominated the match, winning 6-1. The No. 2 doubles team of Joaquin Delpino (Villa Maria, Argentina) and Yu Jhe Du (New Taipei City/Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School) won 6-3. No 3. doubles duo, Patricio Larrea (Ambato, Ecuador/Atenas high school ) and Brendan Lock (Cheyenne, Wyoming) would fall 6-3. 

In singles, Vega won a tough match with a 7-6(7-3) and 6-2 victory. Brendan Lock (Cheyenne, Wyoming) was the only other Mustang to get a win. Lock defeated his opponent 7-6(8-6) and 6-3.

Romero would split sets after winning the first set 7-6(9-7). He would lose the next two sets 6-4 and 6-3. Delpino had a hard fought match before his opponent edged him out 6-2, 6-3. Du couldn't get much going as his opponent won 6-4, 6-1. Larrea had a tough match as he was downed 6-1, 6-1.  

Match Versus CU

On Saturday, April 16th, No. 41 nationally ranked Cameron, who defeated the Mustangs 6-1. 

"After a tough day on Friday, the guys played well and competed against the No. 41 nationally ranked team in the country," said Hunt.

The Mustangs didn't have their best play in doubles, losing the point. The No. 2 doubles team of Delpino and Du won a close match, 7-5. Vega and Romero and Larrea and Lock both fell 6-3. 

"Jonathan had an incredible win against the No. 72 nationally ranked player, giving him his first loss in LSC play," said Hunt.

In singles, Vega played an amazing match playing No. 72 ranked Tomas Almeida. Losing the first set 6-2, Vega went on to win the next two sets 6-3 and 13-11. Lock split sets. He won the first set 6-2, but couldn't lock up the match, losing 6-3 and 10-3. 

Larrea showed some good spurts but would be edged out 6-4, 6-3. Delpino had a rough first set losing 6-1. He wouldn't go down without a fight, losing 7-6(8-6).

Romero did not have his best stuff as his opponent won 6-3 and 6-0. Du played strong before being edged out 6-4 and 6-1.

The Mustangs men have one more match of the regular season, going to UT Permian Basin on Friday, April 22nd!
