Mustangs Split the Day; Marina Garcia Hits Walkoff

Silver City, NM - Sunday afternoon, Western New Mexico University Softball played a doubleheader against St. Mary's University. The Mustangs would win game one with a walkoff double by Marina Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View HS). In game two the Mustangs fell 8-4 despite hitting two homeruns. 

Game One:

The Mustangs tallied 10 hits including a double and triple. After game one the Mustangs had 46 extra-base hits, eight more than a season ago.

St. Mary's struck first after the first runner of the game reached on an error. The Rattlers would extend their lead in the 4th inning after a two-run homerun. They would lead 3-0.

The Mustangs would answer back scoring three runs in the bottom of the 6th inning.  Bryana Munoz (Dexter, NM/Dexter High School) started the inning with a triple. Breeanna Simmons (Chula Vista, CA/Olympian High School) would then single in Munoz. The Mustangs would go on to hit two more hits and reach on an error, bringin in two more runners to tie the game up at 3-3.

In the bottom of the 7th inning, Munoz and Trish Gallardo (Albuquerque, NM/Volcano Vista High School) would single, bringing up Marina Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View HS). Garcia would drive a ball to the left center gap, hitting a walkoff double.

Vanessa Hunt (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe High School) a dominant pitching performance. She would pitch a complete game, earning her second win of the year. Her final went 7.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R (2 ER), and 1 K.

The Rattlers started Jadyn Abrego. She would got the no decision. She went 5.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R (1 ER), and 2 K. Savannah Youngblood got the loss and is now (9-3). Her final went 1.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, and 2 K.

Abigail Carney: 2-for-3, HR, 2B, 1 R, 2 RBI

Victoria Aldridge: 1-for-2, SF, 1 RBI

Mustangs Notable hitters:

M. Garcia: 2-for-4, 2B, 1 R, 1 RBI

B. Munoz: 2-for-4, 3B, 1 R

A. Munoz: 2-for-3

B. Simmons: 1-for-4, 1 RBI

Game Two:

WNMU hitters went on to tally 10 more hits including four extra-base hits, even though they would fall 8-4.

The Mustangs scored first in the 1st inning, after B. Munoz doubled followed by a Simmons RBI single.

In the 3rd inning, the Rattlers took the lead scoring two runs on two hits and an error. 

The Mustangs would tie the game after Garcia doubled, bringing up Janae Ruiz (Kearny, AZ/ Ray High School), who would single down the left field line. It was 2-2 at the end of the inning. 

In the 4th inning, the Rattlers scored after having a lead off walk. The following inning St. Mary's scored another run, but the Mustangs did damage control leaving a pair of runners on base.

St. Mary's added insurance runs, scoring two more runners with two hits and two walks.

In the 7th, St. Mary's added two more runs off a two-run homerun, giving them an 8-2 lead. 

The Mustangs answered back with two runs after Kaylee Hickman (Cloudcroft, NM/Cloudcroft High School ) hit a pinch hit homerun to lead off the inning. That would be the first of her career. Simmons would later step up to the plate and blast her 9th homerun of the year. 

Vanessa Hunt (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe High School) got the start for the Mustangs. She got the no decision. Her final line would go 3.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R (1 ER), 2 K ,and 1 BB. Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University HS) would get the loss. She pitched 2.2 IP, 5 H, (4 ER), 1 K and 4 BB. Aryana Munoz (Dexter, New Mexico/Dexter High School) would come in going 1.1 IP, 2 H, and 2 ER.

St. Mary's starting pitcher, Catalina Cavazos is now (16-1). She pitched a complete game going 7.0 IP, 10 H, 4 ER, 6 K, and 1 BB.

Jayme Johns: 4-for-4, 2B, 1 R, 2 RBI

Mine'e Padilla: 2-for-4: HR, 1 R, 2 RBI

Amber Gonzales: 2-for-5, 1 RBI

Mustangs notable hitters: 

B. Simmons: 4-for-4, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI

K. Hickman: 1-for-1, HR, 1 R, 1 RBI

J. Ruiz: 1-for-3, 1 RBI

The Mustangs will travel to Cameron on April 8th, playing at 3:00pm and 5:00pm and on April 10th against Oklahoma Christian, playing at 11:00am and 1:00pm.
