Box Score Arlington, TX – The Western New Mexico University Men's tennis team played in the Lone Star Conference Championship against No. 40 Cameron University. The Mustangs were defeated 4-1.
"We played really well and our energy never dropped. I credit Cameron, they played hard and they have a strong lineup."
The Mustangs came out strong in doubles, winning the point. The No. 2 doubles team of Joaquin Delpino (Villa Maria, Argentina) and Yu Jhe Du (New Taipei City/Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School) came out strong, winning (6-1). No 3. doubles duo of Patricio Larrea (Ambato, Ecuador/Atenas high school ) and Brendan Lock (Cheyenne, Wyoming) would win a close match, 7-6 (8-6). No. 1 doubles team of Jonathan Vega (Fort Worth, TX/North Crowley HS) and Javier Romero (Estado de Mexico /Instituto Latino Canadiense, Interlaken, ETAC), had a tough match, falling 6-2.
"What we did doubles today has been something we have been working on all season long" said Head Coach Alex Hunt. "It came down to No. 3 doubles, where they were down three games to none. Brendan and Patricio were clutch and were setting each other up to get the tie breaker and ultimately win the match."
In singles, Vega played against No. 64 nationally ranked Tomas Almeida before falling 6-2, 6-0. Romero fell early and could not recover as his opponent would win 6-1, 6-4. Du was out matched 6-3, 6-0.
Playing a strong opponent, Lock would lose in consecutive sets at 6-3. Delpino fell early against No. 26 Tomas Cardona, losing the first set 6-0, but was winning 6-5 before the match was called due to CU clinching. Larrea was in a similar scenario as he won the first set 7-6 (7-5), but the match was called just before the second set would be underway.
"It was an exciting season and a complete turnaround from last season. I am really proud of this team and they set a strong foundation for the future.
The Mustangs season came to an end, as they would finish (11-10). The Mustangs will be back on the courts in the Fall of 2022.
