Match Recap: Men's Tennis | | Dakota Spillers

Men's Tennis Defeats Falcons 4-3

Odessa, TX – The Western New Mexico University Men's and Women's tennis teams played against UT Permian Basin on Friday. The Mustang men won 4-3 and the women fell 7-0

The Mustangs came out strong in doubles, winning the point. No. 1 doubles team of Jonathan Vega (Fort Worth, TX/North Crowley HS) and Javier Romero (Estado de Mexico /Instituto Latino Canadiense, Interlaken, ETAC), who dominated the match, winning 6-3. No 3. doubles duo of Patricio Larrea (Ambato, Ecuador/Atenas high school ) and Brendan Lock (Cheyenne, Wyoming) would win a close match, 7-5. The No. 2 doubles team of Joaquin Delpino (Villa Maria, Argentina) and Yu Jhe Du (New Taipei City/Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School) were edged out 6-4. 

"Jonathan had another huge win against UTPB's No. 1, a player who was nationally ranked a couple weeks ago" said Head Coach Alex Hunt. "Brendan clutched up yet again, winning a tight third set."

In singles, Vega won an exciting match with a 6-3, 6-2 victory. Brendan Lock (Cheyenne, Wyoming) clinched the match winning 7-6(3), 4-6, and 7-5. Yu Jhe Du (New Taipei City/Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School) also split sets before winning. He final scores went 3-6, 6-1, and 6-2.

Romero would split sets after winning the first set 6-4. He would lose the next two sets 7-6(3) and 6-4.. Larrea split sets after winning the first set. 6-2. His opponent went on to  win 6-3, 6-4.  Delpino had a hard fought match before his opponent edged him out 6-2, 6-3.

The Mustangs men will be back on the court next weekend for the LSC Championships in Arlington, TX.
