Silver City, NM - Western New Mexico University's Head Coach Philip Vigil announces the addition of Mac Alexander as the Mustangs Special Teams Coordinator and Defensive Backs Coach.

"Coach Mac has tremendous knowledge not only of Special Teams and DB play, but he has a great grasp for the defensive side of football," said Head Coach Philip Vigil.

Alexander comes from Division I Washington State where he worked with the Cougars special teams. Before WSU, Alexander coached the safeties at Tarleton State in 2019, helping the Texans go 11-1 with a Lone State Conference title and a No. 4 final ranking.

"I am very thankful and blessed to be given the opportunity to join this university, staff and community here at Western New Mexico University," said Alexander. "I want to thank Scott Noble and Coach Vigil for giving us the opportunity to join this athletic department."

"He has been groomed by some of the best minds in football and not only that, but has coached in the LSC," said Vigil. "He understands what it takes to win at a high level in the conference."

During the 2018 season, Alexander coached at Fort Lewis College as the defensive coordinator and the defensive backs. Alexander previously coached four seasons at Colorado Mesa where he was the defensive backs coach and served as the co-special teams coordinator during the 2016-17 seasons. Alexander would also spend two seasons as a graduate assistant at CMU (2014-15), coaching the defensive line and defensive backs.

"Coach Vigil and his staff are building something special here in Silver City and my wife, Chazlyn, and I are excited to be here and can't wait to get to work!" said Alexander.

Alexander played defensive back for Colorado Mesa (2009-11) and was also on the Mavericks basketball program from 2011-14. Alexander received his bachelor's degree in Exercise Science from Colorado Mesa in 2014 and his master's degree in Human Performance and Physical Education from Adams State University in 2016.

"We are pumped to have Coach Mac and his wife join the Mustang family," said Vigil. "Not only is Coach Mac a phenomenal football coach, but he has a heart for his players and will be a tremendous role model for our student-athletes."

Alexander married his wife, Chazlyn in 2016. In early September, the Alexander's are expecting their first child.
