St. Edward's Takes the Day Against Mustangs

Silver City, NM - Saturday afternoon, Western New Mexico University Softball played a doubleheader against St. Edward's University, falling 7-3 and 26-6. 

Game One:

The Hilltoppers got on the board early, scoring three runs on four hits. The first four batters of the game all reached base, including two doubles. 

The Mustangs would answer back with a run after Bryana Munoz (Dexter, NM/Dexter High School) doubled. Munoz would advance to third on the throw. Next batter, Breeanna Simmons (Chula Vista, CA/Olympian High School) would hit a sacrifice fly, bringing in Munoz. WNMU trailed 3-1 after the 1st inning.

In the bottom of the 3rd inning, Simmons would tie the game with a two run homerun. Simmons now has eight homeruns on the year.

SEU would retake the lead in the top of the 4th inning, after a passed ball would bring in a run.

The Hilltoppers added insurance runs after hitting back-to-back homeruns. SEU's Jordan Neely would hit a two-run homerun followed by a solo homerun Valarie Brant. 

The Hilltoppers started with McKenna Leamon who is now (8-7) on the year. She would pitch a complete game throwing 7.0 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 8 K, and 1 BB. 

The Mustangs started Vanessa Hunt (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe High School). She pitched 7.0 IP, 10 H, 7 R (6 ER), 1 K and 1 HBP. 

SEU had 10 total hits with six extra-base hits. Three of their hitters had a multi-hit game.

Genisa Marrero-Carter: 2-for-4, 2B, 1 R

Megan Morris: 2-for-4, 2B, 2 R

Jordan Neely: 2-for-4, HR, 2 R, 4 RBI

Valarie Brant: 1-for-3, HR, 1 R, 1 RBI

B. Munoz: 2-for-3, 2B, 2 R

Game Two:

The Mustangs were down early in the 1st inning, as the Hilltoppers put up 7 runs. SEU had four hits, bringing in seven runs. In the inning, SEU had a grandslam, three-run homerun, a double, and two walks.

The Mustangs answered back with two runs after a Simmons double to right center brought in two runs. The Mustangs trailed 7-2 after the 1st inning.

TAMUK extended their lead in the 4th inning scoring 16 runs. In the inning they had 14 hits, including two homeruns. The Hilltoppers led 23-2.

In the 5th inning, SEU added on with three more runs on four hits. One of the hits was a solo homerun. 

The Mustangs didn't go down without fighting. WNMU tallied four more runs. Janae Ruiz (Kearny, AZ/ Ray High School) started the inning with a double. Cecy Jurado (El Monte, California/South El Monte High school) then singled in Ruiz. Munoz then stepped up and singled in Jurado. Continuing the rally, Simmons doubled bringing in Munoz. Trish Gallardo (Albuquerque, NM/Volcano Vista High School) was the last Mustang to drive in a run after hitting a sacrifice fly. The Mustangs ended the game falling 26-6.

Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University HS) got the start for WNMU. She pitched 2.0 IP, 8 H, 10 R (8 ER), 1 K and 3 BB. Aryana Munoz (Dexter, New Mexico/Dexter High School) would come in going 2.1 IP, 11 H, 8 R (5 ER), 1 K, and 1 HBP. B. Munoz finished out the game throwing 0.2 IP, 6 H, 8 R (5 ER), 1K ,and 1 BB.

SEU's starting pitcher, Cadie Belle Currie is now (2-7). She pitched 4.1 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, 7 K, and 2 BB. Renna Toomey finished out the game throwing 0.2 IP, and 1 K.

Kathryn Connelly: 4-for-4, 2B, 4 R, 1 RBI

The Mustangs will be back on the diamond on Sunday, April 3rd, with first pitch at 11:00am and 1:00pm MST.
