Men's Tennis Bounces Back Against the YellowJackets After Being Defeated by #30 UTT

Tyler, TX – The Western New Mexico University Men's tennis team traveled out to play a doubleheader, one match against University of Texas at Tyler and the other against LeTourneau University, Friday afternoon. The team would go on to split with a record of 1-1 for the day. 

"It was a bit of a rough day for the team fighting against the struggles of playing a doubleheader on the day," stated Head Coach Alex Hunt. "We are regroup and get ready for our next opponent, St. Mary's." 

Match vs UTT:

In doubles, the Patriots took the point, despite dropping a set to the Mustangs. In the Number Three Doubles match, team Brendan Lock (Cheyenne, Wyoming) and Patricio Larrea (Ambato, Ecuador/Atenas high school ) went on to defeat #30 national ranked UTT, (7-5). 

"Our Number Three Doubles team pulled off a great conference win against a nationally ranked team and I am very proud of them," stated Hunt. 

In singles play, the Patriots did not let up winning 7-0 against the Mustangs. Number One Singles match, Jonathan Vega (Fort Worth, TX/North Crowley HS) dropped both sets, (4-6, 2-6 [1]) although he put up a fight. Number Two Singles match, Joaquin Delpino (Villa Maria, Argentina) suffered a loss (3-6, 2-6 [2]). Javier Romero (Estado de Mexico /Instituto Latino Canadiense, Interlaken, ETAC) had a tough day against the Patriots losing (2-6, 0-6 [3]). 

Yu Jhe Du (New Taipei City/Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School) was unable to bring in a win for Number Three Singles Match for the Mustangs. The Patriots went on to take Singles Number Five and Six, Patricio Larrea (Ambato, Ecuador/Atenas high school ) and Brendan Lock (Cheyenne, Wyoming), (4-6, 2-6 [5]) and (3-6, 6-7 [6]). 
 

Match vs Letourneau:

In doubles play, the Mustang would drop the point to the YellowJackets, 1-2. Doubles Team Number One, Jonathan Vega (Fort Worth, TX/North Crowley HS) and Javier Romero (Estado de Mexico /Instituto Latino Canadiense, Interlaken, ETAC) were defeated (5-8) followed by Doubles Team Number Three, Patricio Larrea (Ambato, Ecuador/Atenas high school ) and Brendan Lock (Cheyenne, Wyoming) (4-8). Doubles Number Two, Joaquin Delpino (Villa Maria, Argentina) and Yu Jhe Du (New Taipei City/Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School) won the match (8-3). 

Hoping for a better outcome in singles, Jonathon Vega started out the Mustangs with a win in Singles match Number One (6-2, 6-1 [1]). Senior, Joaquin Delpino (Villa Maria, Argentina) also pulled off the win, (6-1, 6-0 [2]) against Letourneau. Singles match Number Three, Javier Romero (Estado de Mexico /Instituto Latino Canadiense, Interlaken, ETAC) came up short in a close match, (3-6, 2-6 [3]). Yu Jhe Du (New Taipei City/Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School) took Singles match Number Four to three sets but was unable to get the victory (6-4, 1-6, 2-6 [4]).

Patricio Larrea (Ambato, Ecuador/Atenas high school ) took care of Singles match Number Five with a (6-3, 6-2 [5]) win over the YellowJackets. Singles Number Six, Brendan Lock (Cheyenne, Wyoming) dominated his opponent (6-1, 6-0). Lorenzo Orellano secured the night with a win (8-7) for the Mustangs in a tie-breaker. 
 

The Mustangs will be back on their home courts April 9th, starting at doubles play at 3:00 pm MT.
