Box Score 2 Denver, CO – Continuing their road trip, the Western New Mexico University Men's and Women's tennis teams played two matches on Monday. The Mustangs started out playing Metro State of Denver and concluded playing against Seward County Community College. The men battled through a tough 7-0 loss against MSU-Denver and lost against Seward County Community College, 6-1.
"We played very close matches all day but just couldn't quite get it done," said Assistant Coach Griffin Weinka. "MSU-Denver and Seward County Community College are very competitive teams but he fought and learned a lot."
"We played a very good MSU-Denver team. We played some of the best matches all season, but we learned a lot and can take some things and implement them into our game for the rest of the year" said Assistant Coach Griffin Weinkam.
Match vs MSU-Denver:Â
The Mustangs played a tough #49 MSU-Denver team. The Mustangs only won one match on the day and it came in No. 1 doubles. Jonathan Vega (Fort Worth, TX/North Crowley HS) and Javier Romero (Estado de Mexico /Instituto Latino Canadiense, Interlaken, ETAC) earned the 7-5 victory over a very tough MSU-Denver duo. The Mustangs No. 2 Doubles tandem of Joaquin Delpino (Villa Maria, Argentina) and Yu Jhe Du (New Taipei City/Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School) played a close match before falling 7-5. No. 3 doubles duo Patricio Larrea (Ambato, Ecuador/Atenas high school ) and Brendan Lock (Cheyenne, Wyoming) were just edged out 6-4.
In singles, three Mustangs would split sets. Vega played a very good opponent. He got down early losing 6-1 but would bounce back, winning the second set 6-3 before losing the match 7-5. Du started off strong, winning the first set 6-2. He would lose the next two sets 6-4, 6-2. Brendan Lock (Cheyenne, Wyoming) had a great match before falling. We would lose the first set 7-5, win the second set 6-2, and lose a close third set 10-7.
Delpino had a tough match as he was defeated 6-4, 6-1. Romero had a close match before his opponent would win 7-5, 6-4. Larrea played a very good opponent as well, as he would fall 6-2, 6-0.
Match vs Seward County Community College
The Mustangs lost to #3Â nationally ranked Seward County Community College, 6-1.Â
"I challenged the men to keep the energy up and compete all match along" said Weinkam.
In doubles, No. 1 tandem Jonathan Vega (Fort Worth, TX/North Crowley HS) and Javier Romero (Estado de Mexico /Instituto Latino Canadiense, Interlaken, ETAC) fought but were just edged out 6-4. No. 3 doubles duo Patricio Larrea (Ambato, Ecuador/Atenas high school ) and Brendan Lock (Cheyenne, Wyoming) battled against their opponents but lost 6-2.
In singles, three Mustangs would split sets again. Brendan Lock (Cheyenne, Wyoming) was the sole Mustang to get a win. Winning the first set 6-4, he would lose the second set 6-4, forcing a third set. Lock would wind up taking the victory winning the third set 10-3. Vega played a very tough opponent and took him to three sets, winning the first set 6-4, then losing the second set 6-1. In the third set Vega's opponent would get the best of him winning 10-8. Larrea showed great fight after losing the first set 6-0, coming back and winning the second set 7-6(2). He would lose the third set 10-6.Â
Du had a tough match losing 6-0, 6-2. Playing a very good opponent, Romero lost 6-2, 6-1 and Delpino lost in consecutive sets 6-1, 6-1. Â
The Mustangs will be back on their home courts March 25th against Midwestern State at 12:00pm and Saturday, March 26th, at 1:00pm against Dallas Baptist.
The Mustang Men will then play Colorado Mesa on Tuesday before they head back to New Mexico and start LSC play.
