Box Score Colorado Springs, CO – The Western New Mexico University Men's and Women's tennis team played Colorado College this afternoon. The men won 6-3.
"The Men played a rowdy, high energy Colorado College team and took care of business," said Assistant Coach Griffin Weinkam. "Number One singles played very well set the tone."
The Mustangs got off to a great start winning the doubles point. Jonathan Vega (Fort Worth, TX/North Crowley HS) and Javier Romero (Estado de Mexico /Instituto Latino Canadiense, Interlaken, ETAC) earned the 8-4 victory. Rodrigo Mere (Coatepeque, Guatamala/Colegio El Bosque) and Brendan Lock (Cheyenne, Wyoming) defeated their opponents 8-6. The Mustangs No. 2 Doubles tandem of Joaquin Delpino (Villa Maria, Argentina) and Yu Jhe Du (New Taipei City/Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School) had a tough match but fought before falling 8-6.
In singles, Vega had a strong showing winning 6-1, 6-2. Delpino bounced from doubles defeating his opponent 6-1, 6-4. Continuing his great play from doubles, Romero went on to win 6-0, 6-3. Playing in the sixth spot, Lock secured a win after winning both of his sets 6-4, 6-2.
Du had a tough first set losing 6-0 but would battle back in the second before falling 7-6(4). Patricio Larrea (Ambato, Ecuador/Atenas high school ) was down early in the first set losing 6-3, but would win the second set 6-2. He would lose a close battle in the third set 10-6.
The Mustangs will head to Metro State of Denver on Monday and then will play Seward County Community College. The Mustang Men will then play Colorado Mesa on Tuesday before they head back to New Mexico.
