Box Score 2 Abilene, TX– The Western New Mexico University Men's tennis team made their way into what will be a busy weekend with a double header on the day against Hardin Simmons University and McMurry University. WNMU will be taking a victory back home to Silver City, NM as the Mustang defeated both teams.
"We started the day ready to play knowing we were going to be facing a tough Hardin Simmons team," said Head Coach Alex Hunt. "We really took care of business at my Alma Mater which was really exciting."
vs Hardin Simmons University:
In doubles, Mustangs dropped the Number One match, however, was able to pull through to secure the doubles point.
In the singles matches, Jonathan Vega (Fort Worth, TX/North Crowley HS) set the tone for the rest of the team defeating HSU in a tie-breaker. "Those top guys at Hardin Simmons are legit so Johnathan Vega and Joaquin Delpino (Villa Maria, Argentina) really came through to pull off some tough, clutch wins," stated Coach Hunt.
Singles matches Number Four-Six showed excellent execution from Yu Jhe Du (New Taipei City/Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School) winning [6-1,6-2(4)], Patricio Larrea (Ambato, Ecuador/Atenas high school ) [6-7, 6-3, 10-7(5)], and Brendan Lock (Cheyenne, Wyoming) [4-6,6-3, 10-7(6)]. Mustangs would defeat Hardin Simmons in a final score of 7-2.
vs McMurry University:
In the doubles, WNMU dominated McMurry with a 3-0 sweep that exemplified great team work and team effort. Jonathan Vega (Fort Worth, TX/North Crowley HS) and Javier Romero (Estado de Mexico /Instituto Latino Canadiense, Interlaken, ETAC) started the doubles with a close match clinching the wing 8-6. Joaquin Delpino (Villa Maria, Argentina) and Yu Jhe Du (New Taipei City/Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School) took care of their responsibility to win in a 8-5 win. Rodrigo Mere (Coatepeque, Guatamala/Colegio El Bosque) and Brendan Lock (Cheyenne, Wyoming) would win the doubles match Number Three in an overpowering 8-0.
"We drove straight to McMurry, hopped on the court, so it was a quick transition. Our guys were able to keep their momentum with them the entire time which was so great to watch," concluded Coach Hunt.
Going into the singles matches, all six Mustangs had full control of each match. Three out of the six Mustangs had a 6-0 victory in at least one of their sets. In the end, the final score lead the Mustangs to a 9-0 sweep against a resilient McMurry team.
Mustangs will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday February 19th to play against Howard Payne University at 10am.
