Box Score Phoenix, AZ – The Western New Mexico University Men's tennis team played the Ottawa University Arizona Spirit at a neutral site in Phoenix, Arizona. The men would fall in an extremely tough loss to OUAZ 4-3.
"It was a heart breaking loss against OUAZ," said Head Coach Alex Hunt. "It really goes to show the importance of the doubles point right from the beginning because we were right there and we could have won it."
In doubles, Jonathan Vega (Fort Worth, TX/North Crowley HS) and Javier Romero (Estado de Mexico /Instituto Latino Canadiense, Interlaken, ETAC) would secure a win in the number two doubles match against the Spirit (6-1). The Mustangs dropped the doubles match number one and three giving OUAZ the doubles point.
The Mustangs went into the singles matches with a 0-1 disadvantage to the Spirit. Vega immediately brought confidence to the Mustang team defeating the Spirit [6-1, 6-3 (1)]. "Jonny Vega went in and took care of business against a very talented player and I am very proud of Jonny as he had another great win," said Hunt.
In the number two singles match, Joaquin Delpino (Villa Maria, Argentina) held a great lead against OUAZ but unfortunately could not secure the win. Javier Romero (Estado de Mexico /Instituto Latino Canadiense, Interlaken, ETAC) and Yu Jhe Du (New Taipei City/Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School) came up with some clutch points to bring the Mustangs 3-3. The final singles match lasted a tiresome three hours as both Brendan Lock (Cheyenne, Wyoming)e and the OUAZ Spirit player went head to head refusing to allow the other to score on them. In the end, the Spirit would take the last point 6-4 to give them the defeat over the Mustangs.
"It was really disappointing however, we are going to keep our heads high because we played some really great tennis 90% of the time. The last 10% got away from us so we are going to work on playing really great 100% of the time and staying focused for a long period of time (3-4 hours)," concluded Hunt.
