Surprise, AZ – The Western New Mexico University Men's and Women's tennis team played Colorado Mesa at a neutral site in Surprise, AZ. The men would win a tight knit match 4-3.
"The energy was great all match long and the guys got some great wins over great talent" said Head Coach Alex Hunt.
In doubles, the Mustangs nabbed the point, winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams would get wins. The Mustangs No. 1 duos team, Joaquin Delpino (Villa Maria, Argentina) and Yu Jhe Du (New Taipei City/Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School) defeated their opponent 6-1. Jonathan Vega (Fort Worth, TX/North Crowley HS) and partner Javier Romero (Estado de Mexico /Instituto Latino Canadiense, Interlaken, ETAC) won 7-5.Â
In singles, half of the Mustangs would earn a point. Vega had a tough match just edging out his opponent going [6-1, 7-6(7-3)]. Patricio Larrea (Ambato, Ecuador/Atenas high school ) had a great match defeating his opponent (6-4, 6-4). Brendan Lock (Cheyenne, Wyoming) would split sets but come out with a win going (4-6, 6-1, 6-0).Â
"Jonny got a good confidence booster, really taking it to a very talented player" said Hunt. "Patricio and Brendan had some clutch play. Brendan came up with the clutch point to secure the match."
Javier Romero (Estado de Mexico /Instituto Latino Canadiense, Interlaken, ETAC) split sets (1-6, 6-0) before CMU's Jorge Abreu would win the point (6-3). Du had a tough match and showed fight before falling (6-3, 7-5). Rodrigo Mere (Coatepeque, Guatamala/Colegio El Bosque) got the nod in the sixth spot, but would be defeated (6-3, 6-3).
Both tennis teams look to end the weekend on a high note, playing Ottawa (AZ) on Saturday, with first serve starting at 4:00pm!
